; i : i . i MANY HORSES ARRIVING AT LAUREL. Baltimore, Md., September 30. The first shipment of thoroughbreds of importance to arrive at Laurel Park from Canada for the twenty-six day race meeting of the Maryland State Fair, which will be inaugurated next Monday afternoon, was that in charge of William Shields, who has in charge the horses of Dr. J. S. Tyree, Washington chemist, and Paul Powers. Shields reached the Southern Maryland track Thursday, coming from the Blue Bonnets course in Montreal, where he ended a successful campaign with the closing of that meeting. The horses best known to followers of the turf in this section, which Shields will saddle at Laurel, will be King Neptune, Celto and Billy McGee, all of which flashed the Tyree silks past the Judges in front on the Canadian tracks, and Top o th Morning and Fels, both of wltich scored in the Powers colors across the border. Top o th Morning, a former member of the stable of Frederick Johnson, who raced Cock o the Walk in Maryland, will be among those that will participate in the Laurel Handicap, six longs, feature of the Maryland State Fairs open- ing day card. Top o th Morning, a chestnut son of Peep oDay and Lady Balgowan, beat some of the best sprinters in Canada during the past summer. Fels, a stable companion of Top o th Morning, will be started by .Shields in the iuter-i ests of Mr. Powers in the handicaps over a considerable distance of ground at Laurel. Dr Tyree will not be represented in the Laurel Handicap. but ills black and white stripes will be carried by King Neptune in the three principal races of the meeting, the Baltimore, Washington and National Handicaps. King Neptune was one of the best three-year-olds raced in Canada this season. The real exodus of turfmen from Canada to Laurel will not be on until the close of the meeting at Woodbine on Saturday afternoon. Inime-, diately after the last race is run on the Toronto , track a special train will leave for Laurel with the stables of the following: James Arthur, James Barry, C. J. Brockmiller, G. E. Chancellor, E. J. Crawford, William Garth, J. Lumsden. R. T. McKeever, E. Murray, F. Musante, Lew Marion, AV. I. Oliver, O. E. Pons, W. F. Presgrave, H. Rites, George P. Sherman, Smith and Farrar, W. . Stormont, R. S. Steele, J. TJ. Strode, Ed Trotter and the Mirasol Stable.
