TWO WELL-KNOWN TURFMEN RULED OFF. j By Peter Clark. Reno, Nov., October 7. After a thorough investigation . into the race run by the horse Re- laney, when apprentice rider G. Leeds gave . him a suspicious looking ride, Leeds confessed to the stewards that he was approached . in his room at midnight previous to the race by Tom Hatfield, an owner, and M. M. Hart-man, . a San Francisco business man, offering him , one hundred dollars to pull the horse, then increased it to the purse for his employer and two hundred for himself, but the rider claimed that t lie refused to accept. It is presumed that Leeds must have been coerced I in " some manner before the running; because the i ride that he gave Delaney Avas disgraceful. Tho J following ruling concerning the affair has been 1 handed down by the Board of Stewards and the J ruling has been approved by the Nevada State 2 Racing Commission: "At a meeting held this sixth day of October, , 1910, bv the Board of Stewards of the Nevada i State Racing Commission, those present being Messrs. Holtman, Berry and Schas, it was unani - mously recommended to the Nevada State Racing Commission that the licenses of E. J. Ramsey, -Tom Hatfield and jockey George Leeds be revoked -and that they be warned off the track with tlieir horses immediately; and further that M. M. Hart- . man be denied the privileges of the . course. The reasons assigned for this are their improper con- duct and actions that are considered detrimental to the best interests of racing within the state of Nevada." "J. J. Holtman, "Geo. W. Berry, "J. A. Selias, : "Board of Stewards of the Nevada State Racing Commission." A heavy downpour of rain followed by the first snow storm of the season occured October 4, putting the track in treacherous condition and causing the management to postpone the races for three days. . With the reopening on Saturday, October , Mayor Byington has declared a half holiday as Reno will celebrate the opening of her Great White Way. This busy little city is not to be outdone bv San Francisco and her Path of Gold, or New York, with her Great White Way. The Elks of the state, who are to participate in the event, and the local lodge are guests of the Racing Association, the occasion being designated Elks Day.
