PIF JR. OUTSTAYS HODGE TAKES THE LATONIA CHIEF RACE IN A LONG STRETCH DRIVE. Cudgel Shows Eomarkablo Improvement in a Fast Race Several Favorites Fail Their Admirers Old Howdy Howdy Scores. Cincinnati. O., October IS. A rousing finish developed at Latonia this afternoon in the feature race, a handicap at one mile and three-sixteenths, contested by Hodge, Pif Jr. and Fair Mac. Pif Jr. won in the last stride from Hodge, the latter tiring under his heavy impost of 129 pounds in the final strides. During the early running, Hodge made the pace under restraint, with Pif Jr. and Fair Mac alternating as his closest followers. Fair Mac made several challenges and would have been more dangerous if better managed. Pif Jr. offered his final challenge just before rounding into the stretch. Then ensued a battle royal, for Hodge kept to his task and only in the last seventy yards did Tif Jr., manage to wear him down. John W. Schorrs Cudgel suddenly recovered his best form and led home a good band of two-year-olds that started in the fifth race, for which Felicidad was most favored. In his last preceding start Cudgel could not raise a respectable gallop and followed the others for the entire way. This afternoon he raced close up and drew out in the stretch to win as his rider pleased. Sol Gilseys showing in this race was much below his best form. Threatening weather, accompanied by several light showers, was responsible for a slightly decreased attendance, but the betting was of fair volume and the racing spirited. The defeats of the most extensively backed contenders gave the public a setback. Dahlia was the one selected by the public to win the opener, but she failed to get any part of the purse. Miladi Anne, coupled in tlu? betting with Lucky Liz, because W. W. Darden has a contingent interest in her. won after a hard drive with the outsider, Lightfoot. Hill Simmons was the choice for the second, but a poor sendoff through his riders getting caught napping, was responsible for his failure. ISrown Velvet, running to her best form and showing improvement, won in easy style. Howdy Howdy furnished an upset in the third race. The old fellow was in a running mood this afternoon and led from the start. After the finish lie was advanced 00 over his entered price of 00, but was bought in with an advance of by the owner. Geo. C. Love was sold by J. M. Henry. Jr., to It. P. Dickinson at an advance over the price Henry Claimed him for. Trainer W. 15. Jennings was advised this afternoon that tlje recent Macomber acquisition, Boots, would arrive from Laurel tonight. Trainer Perkins went before the stewards this afternoon to ascertain the status of Deliver.. Chief Brown and Jane Straith, he claiming half ownership in the latter as well as in the first named paid. He was told that the horses would not be permitted to start at this track and that if the owners decided to dispose of them by auction, the officials probably would not interpose any objections. Owner J. C. Gallaher sought advice from the stewards whether he had a basis for protesting the bid on Howdy Howdy, because it is alleged that "Walter H. Pearce furnished F. L. Moore with some of the money to make the bid. Gallaher was told that it was within the right of any one in good standing to bid on any of the winners. The New Orleans situation is causing some of the owners here concern, but they are hopeful that ultimately the situation will clear up sufficiently to enable them to ship there shortly after the close of the racing here.
