JOCK SCOT RUNS A FAST RACE. Defeats Deer Trap in Laurels Feature Race Benevolent an Easy Winner Track Gossip. Baltimore, Md., October IS. A handicap for two-year-olds at three-quarters and an allowance race for three-year-olds and over at one mile and a sixteenth were provided as features by Secretary Joseph McLennan at Laurel this afternoon. The former furnished an interesting contest, in which G. A. Cochrans Jock Scot beat the top-weight Deer Trap by a scant half length. Jock Scot .showed a good turn of speed all the way and, in the early running, raced the Butler entry, Lively, into defeat. The race was run in 1:12, which marked a good performance, considering the cold and raw state of the weather. Benevolent won cantering from his opponents in the fifth race. Fnirbrother had him under a stout pull for the first half mile, and after taking an easy lead on the far turn, Avon pulling up. Polroma was second and Berrilldon third. Gloamings victory in the second race cost his new owner. "Walter Shannon, 05 to retain him. He was bid up that amount by H. G. Bedwell. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Livingston were among the visitors at Laurel this afternoon. They came up from their farm at Kancocas. N. J., and will remain a few days. Mrs. Livingston has decided not to race any of her horses in the future. She will dispose of the produce of Kancocas Farm and her breeding establishment at Cobonrg, Canada, at private sale in the future. She has at her place in New Jersey, brothers and sisters to several good racers. The success of Mr. It. T. "Wilsons home-bred two-year-olds this year has been highly encouraging to some of the gentlemen who have lately gone into breeding on their own account. Gif-ford A. Cochran has at his farm at Mount Kisco, ton handsome Aveanlings. They are all out of choicely bred mares. Mr. Cochran had but ten mares on his place and all of them foaled. Eight of the foals are colts. Four of them are by His Majesty, all colts, one by Tracery Glass Jug, another by Onnondale Veils, one by Swynford Quair, a filly by Sweei Henpeck, a colt by Og-den Golden Drop and a filly by Celt Adrianna. The dams of the His Majesty colts are Pretty Maiden, Connemara, Early Rose and The Marchioness. "William Midgley looked them over a few days ago and pronounced them as good looking a band he has ever seen. The Cochran horses will again winter at Belmont Park and Midgley will start out next spring with a string of twenty-two. Several horses changed hands this morning at private sale. Many of the horsemen here are adding new material to their stables for racing at the different winter meetings. G. It. Bryson secured Vermont from J. O. Talbott; L. J. Carey purchased Supernal from James Butler; B. T. McKcever purchased Tiug-a-Ling from O. C. Biaocchi: John Lowe bought the promising two-year-old "Whirling Dun. J. W. Pangle and A. J. .Toyner bought the filly Feminist from G. A. Cochran. The latter is intended for the stud. She is by Voter Belle of Ashland. There were a number of arrivals from different parts of the country. Edward It. Bradley got in from Kentucky and will remain several days. John J. McGraw is here on his annual visit. Gene Austin came down from "Wisconsin; Dion Kerr came up from Virginia; A. L. Aste came over from New York, as did also Chief Lally of the Brooklyn fire department, and Capt. T. J. Huston. R. J. Mackenzie, whose horses arc racing at Latonia, also arrived to enjoy a few days of the sport. Courtship is ineligible to start in the third race tomorrow and will be withdrawn. A notice was posted in the secretarys office warning trainers and owners from harboring jockey Paul Lowder, who has left the employ of James Rowe without the hitters permission. F. Harlan and I. M. Hedrick filed a claim for Blue Cap yesterday, and in the drawing Hedrick secured the horse. He afterwards sold him back to Emil Herz. Frank J. Ortell has purchased the well-bred mare Margaret Mcise, by Star Shoot Cherry Pit, from Thomas Francis.
