Stringfield, Expires Suddenly Star Hawk in a Good Trial for the Latonia Cup. r Cincinnati, O.. October 23. Some poor riding and the changeable track was responsible for unsatisfactory racing results at Latonia this afternoon. Not one of the races could be described as having been truly run and in some cases the best horses were defeated. The worst upset developed with the feature race in which G. M. Hendries good handicap horse, Itancher, was an outstanding choice. lie did not even run to a place. Prince llennis Avon the nice witli the utmost ease. Another case of bad judgment in riding that contributed materially towards the failure of a well-backed horse was that on Billy Joe. Jockey Murphy gave that racer such poor riding by taking him into the worst going that he ultimately succumbed to Lukemae for third place. Ed Howard after a long rest won handily from Bolala. Jockey Goose outgenerald the other riders in the third race, which enabled Knebelkamp to win by a narrow margin from Perseus and Bluebannoek. In the fifth race First Star scored in lucky fashion from Little Bigger. The latters failure was in the main due to Barretts inability to do his mount justice. The sixth race was attended by another upset, -when Passing Fancy and Saffron Girl, both showing improved form, led the others for the entire war. Bedtime Stories, the favorite for this race, wis all over the track and suffered from interference from Mary Belle in the stretch racing. Three sealed bids of ,300, ,300 and ,700, made respectively by J. AV. Schorr, AV. V. Walsh and J. 15. Stringfield was known to all the present generation of horsemen and in-eluded in his acquaintances those of more than forty vears ago. His remains will be buried at Lexington Tuesday. He fell dead in his hotel yesterday and was fifty-seven years old. X. Macfarlane, the well-known sportsman of Montreal, Que., was among the days arrivals. E. R. Lilley will accompany him there. Jockey A. Claver is expected here tomorrow to ride for Troxler and Knebelkamp. Jockey J. Callahan was sharply cautioned by the stewards after the second race for attempted interference with Ed Howard.
