BREEDING OF CAULFIELD GUINEAS WINNER. I see that Wolaroi, the undoubtedly best two-year-old of last season in Australia, has been beaten into second place for the Caulfield Guineas by Ettefred, which is a brown filly by George Frederick Simmetrette. The Caulfield Guineas corresponds with our Two Thousand Guineas, and the pedigree of the winner is interesting, as it is exactly in accord with a pet idea of my own, viz., to combine Carbine and Trenton, with speedy blood intervening. George Frederick, the sire of Ettefred, is a Carbine horse, and Simmerette, her dam, is by Simmer out of Etra Weenie, by Trenton out of Nellie, by Tim AVhiffler. Simmer, it may be remembered, is by St. "Simon out of Dutch Oven, by Dutch Skater out of Bal Gal. Here then is a perfect blend of stamina and speed such as 1 have been advocating for a good many years past, and those who have acted on my advice will lie glad to know of this practical object lesson in what they may have hitherto regarded as only theory. I could instance a good many other successes of the same sort, but the latest is always the most likely to attract attention. On the other hand, it has been demonstrated that Carbine and Trenton, without the intervention of speedy blood, produce stamina without sufficient speed, as in the case of Grave Greek, which is by Wargrave son of Carbine out of Greek Girl, by Trenton. Mr. Dobson Peacock, Mr. A. E. Barton, Mr. Grant Hugh Browne, Mr. F. S. Brown and Mr. McKinney are all in possession of yearlings bred on the same plan as Ettefred, viz.. by a grandson of Carbine Javelin out of granddaughters of Trenton, and with any amount of speedy blood in between. Mr. Peacocks yearling is out of Miss Starlight, by Watercress out of Colonial, by Trenton; Mr. Bartons is out. of Petty Cash, by Aurum son of Trenton out of Petrovna. by Peter; Mr. Grant Hugh Brownes is out of African Slave, by Kano son of Trenton and tracing to Vex out of Therese II., by St. Serf; Mr. F. S. Browns is out of Sloria, by Collar, second dam by Grand Flaneur, third dam by Trenton; and Mr. McKiimeys is from Torpen-how sister to Prawle Point, by Torpoint. On second thoughts tills is a colt-foal, and not a yearling, the mares yearling being a filly by Collar. In all these cases the dams contribute sufficient elements of speed, and Javelins paternal grandam and tam are full of this finality. through Minting. Flying Fox. Hermit, etc. Ettefred is in the Victoria Derby, and the longer course ought to suit her. She is the property of Mr. J. Mills., and is" trained by P. T. lieywood. She is handicapped at !7 pounds for tilt; Melbourne Cup. for which Wolaroi is given 10-1 pounds, but classic victories are specially provided for. When I wrote that Walaroi was the best two-year-old of last season 1 mean, of course, the season which closed at. the end of July. The colts most recent performance was in April, when he carried 1151 pounds and won the Champagne Stakes, at Raudwick, beating Poitrina 120 pounds, 2nd, and 1 liana, 130 pounds, 3rd.
