CANADIAN TRIBUTE TO MARTIMAS. Sportsman Talks of His Futurity Victory and His Disqualification in Flatbush Stakes. The Canadian Sportsman has the following to say of Martimas: -, Martimas was by imported Candlemas Biggonet, and was purchased by the late William Hen-drie at a New York sale as a yearling. His first start was at Fort Erie, where he Avon the Niagara Stakes, and before the meeting was over added another stake to his credit. He was then shipped to Saratoga, where ho ran twice, but failed to get inside the money. After that he won a stake event at Montreal, from where he was shipped to Sheeps-head Bay and won the Futurity in a field of twenty-two of the best two-year-olds in training that year. The horses were an hour and thirty-five minutes at the post and some of the experts credited Martimas victory to that, but a few weeks later he gave weight to practically the same horses in the Flatbush, and once more pranced home in front, after leading from the start, but for some unknown leason he was disqualified. The disqualification was far from being popular and New York turf writers to this day refer to it as ar. injustice to the horse and to the late William Hendrie, who always considered Martimas the best horse he ever owned. In the Futurity Martimas was not conceded a chance, and odds of CO to 1 were laid against him, with the Canadian contingent getting down strong. After his disqualification in the Flatbush the stewards approached the late William llendrie and offered an onology for their action, but his reply was short and pointed. "Gentlemen," he said, "I do not care for your purse. I am satisfied that I have the best horse, aud that ia what I am racing for." As a two-year-old he also won the Rarieho Del Iaso Stakes and in the Great Eastern Handicap was beaten by Black Venus and Ethelbert, after carry-lug an impost of 12S pounds. His greatest performance as a two-year-old was probably in the Iiancho Del Paso Stakes, in which he ran three-quarters of a mile in the mud with the heavy weight up, in 1:12 and a fraction. As a three-year-old he did not race much, but among his other victories that year, he won the Canadian Derby at Fort Erie and as a four-year-old he won the Spencer Handicap at Saratoga, and the Toronto Cup. His total winnings amounted to S52.000. and to date his progeny lias won 9,038. Eddie Whyte trained Martimas for all his important races, and he was ridden by Harry Lewis In the majority of the events in which he started. Although as a sire he has served a limited number of mares, he has sired two Kings Plate winners, and several other horses that proved stake winners. He was the sire of Slipper Day, the fastest filly that was ever bred in Canada, and won nearly S10.000 for Sir John Hendrie; Glimmer, another good winner; Splutter, Shimonese, and many others. He was bred by Jennings and Enright at the Elmendorf Stud in Kentucky, and his produce with the winnings of each follow: Slipper Day 9,715 Splutter ,395 Glimmer S.920 Amberite 7,182 Kelpie 5,050 Shimonese 0,750 Kelvin 4,302 Rockspring 3,570 Gartley 3,530 Marion Gaiety ... 4,290 AVhite Caps 2,875 Good Shot 3,405 Last Spark ...... 1,939 Powennan 2,970 Joe Gaiety 1,470 Old Pop 1,370 !
