CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. AV. J. Weber claimed Canto out of the fifth race, at Juarez, Thursday, for 25. Recent arrivals at Juarez include the stables of O. G. Parke, F. DeBeque and 11. F. Snyder. Jockey R. Guy was suspended for five days, for reporting iu an unfit condition to ride, at Juarez, Thursday. J. M. Henry has sold the six-year-old gelding Grosvenor to Dr. McCrosson of Bridgeport. NoJ., and the horse has been shipped from Juarez to his new owners farm. Jockey J. Acton was set down for the balance of the meeting, on the report of patrol judge Dwyer for grabbing hold of the bridle of Rubicon II. in the- fifth race at Juarez, Thursday. The Duke of Portland has given the name of Smack of the Eye to his filly by William the Third Recoil, says an English paper. The choice does not indicate any straining of the wits on the part of whoever was responsible for the choice. From Baltimore comes the news that a race track, to be owned and operated by an association composed solely of horsemen, is a plan which is under way in Maryland. It is stipulated that no one person shall be permitted to own enough stock to give him control. The grandstand on the grounds of the Metropolitan Trotting Club at Christchurch, New Zealand, was destroyed by fire during the progress of a recent meeting, but the fire interrupted the races for only an hour. The stand, recently erected at a cost of 0,000, was one of the finest in Australasia. All ranks of commissioned officers have had horses named for them, and there was even a good one called High Private, but the non-coms, have been pretty generally overlooked. That omission is now remedied by the appearance on the English turf of a promising animal named Sergeant Murphy. He comes from Ireland, where they raise many u good soldier aud many a good horse.
