RYAN SEES GENERAL PROSPERITY. Says Juarez Track Shares in It with Good and Increasing Patronage. William Ryan, Chicago sportsman, who has crossed the continent twice ia the past few weeks, remarked while in Kansas City, on his return, that he had never seen the country, in general, in such a flourishing condition "During November the New York hotels, cafes, theaters, etc., seemed taxed to capacity with business and never have I seen the theater scalpers and head waiters in such clover, but as I travelled through the middle west the same conditions prevailed and when I reached the Pacific coast they seemed to be turning people away everywhere. San Diego, a city of hotels, was overcrowded, and beautiful Corouada Beach had never known so many reservations so early in the season. "Returning by way of El Paso, the same conditions prevailed. Thousands of United States troops were about the streets there and at San Antonio. In fact, they were strnng all along the railway lines from the Pacific coast to the Gulf of Mexico and, although I have seen the soldiers of practically every country, I must say I saw none who lookeil more the part than our own boys. Mostly tall, athletic, well-built young men, burned brown as a berry and looking physically fit. notwithstanding arguments of generals Scott and Wood to the contrary. However, we havent nearly enough of them. "Col. Matt Winn will probably be disappointed in not getting the patronage of the troops at the Juarez races during the winter, as I do not think our men in uniform are allowed to cross the border. Anyway, I did not see any of them at the track. However, the patronage was good, even without them. The plant was spick and span, there being few better to look at anywhere and their business will likely continue to improve after the installation of the regulation mutuel machines. "The whole south seems to have finally come into its own, the people appearing exceptionally well dressed and thrifty looking. I would advise anyone expecting to travel west or south to make tltcir reservations in advance."
