COLD WEATHER AT NEW ORLEANS. Nominations to New Years Handicap Coming in Additional Trainers and Jockeys Licenses. New Orleans. La., December 22. Unusually cold weather, for tiiis section of the country, prevailed here today. The track at the Fair Grounds was in none too good condition, and there were not many horses out for morning trials. A high wind added to the discomfort of the owners and trainers who did get their horses out, but this had the effect of helping to dry out the course, and by tomorrow the going again should be good. Racing Secretary Joseph McLennan reported that nominations to the New Years Handicap, the stake blanks for which were sent out yesterdav, were coming in fast, and he expects a large field to contest for the opening feature of the meeting. Several hundred additional trainers and jockeys licenses were issued today, and by the time judge Joseph A. Murphy returns here next Wednesday, it is expected that this work will have been finished. The licenses will be gone over by judge Murphy before the meeting begins, and for this reason he wants them all filed as early as possible. The cold weather did not deter the owners of coming two-year-olds from sending them to the barrier to be schooled. W. H. Fizer today received word that the name Dunbar, which he had claimed for a coming two-year-old bay colt by Hessian Rose Marie, had been rejected, as was also the name Mabel L., which he selected for a chestnut filly by Trap Rock Lady Paramount. The former was changed to Hazen anl the latter to Hasty Mabel. The new office, to be used bj- racing secretary Mcl.eman for taking entries, was finished today, but 1 e will not move into it until next week.
