MEELICKS SUCCESS IN THE STUD. Triple Derby Winner Doing Well in Lone Star State Despite Limited Opportunities. G. L. Blackford. Denison. Texas, banker, and most enthusiastic breeder of thoroughbred race horses, is. through the wonderful success of the stallion. Mee-liek. doing much to put Texas on the racing map besides making initiatory steps that are bound to finally result in making Texas one of the greatest of thoroughbred states in America. It xvas both a fortunate and wise move this well known Texan made, when he set upon Meelick a.s his choice for basis of stock on his thoroughbred ranch. Though in service only a few years. Meelick has sent to the turf many good performers, the feature of all not laying in their ability to go far so mark as their consistency. It must be remembered, however, that Meelick has. to date, not yet had a really Bead chance through his matings for the pro diiction of long-distance horses. Later, xvhcii Mr. Blackford mates the horse xvith mares whose veins carry blood of noted slaying stock he should prove equally successful. To liegin xvith. Meelick xvas a good race bane in all the words imply. As a 1 wo-year-old he xvon the Sanphire Stakes and the Great Eastern Handi cap. The same year he finished second to the unbeaten Colin in the Great Trial Stakes. Then, xvhen a three-year-old, he came in for many trying races. At. that age he won three Derbys the California at Oakland, the Los Angeles at Santa Anita and the Crescent City at New Orleans. Meelick is a chestnut horso bred in 1905 by Planudes — llythia. Being by Planudes. he comes directly from a great stake winner. Planudes xvas a son of the unbeaten St. Simon — Lonely, the latter winner of the Epsom Oaks. llythia, Meelicks dam. is by Tammany, winner of 17. MM, and a racer owned by the late Marcus Daly of Montana. llythia xvas also a sister to Inishfree. a stake xvinner at two years in this country and a frequent winner in England for several years. Iroquois, sire of Tammany, xvas a Derby and St. Leger xvinner. Bend Or. sire of Ily-1 1lias dam. was also a Derby xvinner. Shotoer. grand dam of llythia. has to her credit, a victory iu the Derby. In Hermit, sire of Lonely, cum s more of the family of Derby xvinners. Then, again. Stockwell. Lonelys grand sire, xvon the Twa Thousand Guineas besides the St. Leger. Of all the horses ever brought to the state of Texas. Meelick ranks foremost from the point of good breeding, coming from the bluest of the blue of all Old Englands thoroughbred blood. Therefore it xvill be seen that Meelick comes from a family of eight Epsom Derby xvinners and three St. Leger xvinners and one Oaks xvinner. For foundation in blood lines, there are fexv horses that excel Meelick. He surely is possessed of all the requisites that go to make for an ideal stock horse, and Texas and Texans should be proud to claim him. Already he has drawn the attention of eastern turfmen who have- been xvest looking into the doings of his youngsters. He has now been in the stud but six years and in the recent disposition at Juarez of a portion of his two-year-olds at private sale to Nexv Yorkers, through Dick Vestal and Mars Cassidy. the- two-year-olds xvill get a chance over the eastern tracks when running in the interests of their new owners next summer. Their efforts xvill be Matched xvith close interest by xvesterners. MeKenzie is a brother to Dnnga Din and Dengro. which raced successfully in Kentucky, New York and eastern Canada. Psyche is a sister to Vampire and Matrix and a half-sister to Col. Austin and Lodostono. Paschal, dam of Psyche, is by Candlemas, sire of the grand race horse, Irish Lad.
