GENERAL NEWS NOTES OF THE DAY. President Wilson, in a note to Gen. Carranza at Mexico City will test his attitude on the Gorman plot, as made known by Ziminei means proposal, to enter this country in a war against Mexico and Japan. It was indicated that the material was procured by Inited States Secret Service men, concerning the Gorman plot, and not, as some critics inferred, from entente sources. There was a report, in fact, that the Secret Service procured it during the examination of Von Rernstorffs party at Halifax. The dispatch of Wednesday night from Washington indicated that the Zimmerman letter had been in the hands of the government for several weeks — even before the dismissal of Rernstorff. and senators like AY. I. Stone of Missouri upbraided the president for withholding it. Unofficial information was that Secretary Lansing has much more information as to Herman machinations, involving Pemstorff in the war plot. The statement of Secretary Lansing Thursday night that the evidence was procured by the Inited States "during the present week" served to remove a misunderstanding that was the basis of numerous comments in Congress. Two more Americans have lost their lives as a result of the Gorman submarine ruthlessness. They were William Jackson si New fork and David Walker of Halllmsrr, seamen on the British sailing-ship Galgoiin Castle, sunk without warning by a German U-Boet Tuesday. Cuban rebels, hoping to induce the United States into intervening in behalf of the restoration of order in the little republic, have destroyed almost the entire sugar cane crop. The destroyed crop already is estimated as amounting to 00,000,000, the entire valuation being 00,000,000. The lower house of Utah passed a bill Thursday making the sale of cigarettes in the state of Utah prohibitory. Polled cigarettes or tobacco for the making of them cannot be sold. China has been invited to join the entente. A serious cabinet situation impends in the far eastern republic.
