GALLOPS EXTENDED TO A MILE. Berlin and Trevisco Cover the Distance in Good Style — Roamer Growing Taller. Py C. A. Bergin. Louisvill-. Ky.. April 4.-.T. S. Wards Kentucky Derby eligible Berlin .as yesterday sent a mile for the first time this year, and he acquitted himself well. In spite of the fact that the Douglas Park track was soft, the colt reeled off the distance in 1:48. He went with an easy swing throughout, and pulled np fresh and strong. lackey Charlie Gross, who has been in the saddle for over twelve years, has been engaged to pilot, Berlin in the Derby. Yesterday he arrived from Tijuana, where be had been riding all winter, ami reported to Mr. Ward. Gram will ride Perlin in all of his future trials, and will in the coming racing season, do the bulk of the riding for the Ward stable. Gross fade on tin- Kentucky tracks two years ago. but last year rode on the far western tracks. He can easily make 111 pounds. Jockey Frank Murphy has arrived from Hot Sp-ings and is now busily engaged galloping some of the horses of .1. W. Seliorr. his contract employer. Murphy is the senior rider of the stable and will, in all probability: be selected to ride Barry Kelly in the Derby. In the event that the stable starts Cudgel also. Fred Judy, the stables other rider, will be given the mount. This will be Murphys first year with Schorr, he aaeeeedlag Guy-Cm who is now in Europe. Murphy is a capable rider. Trainer William Young would rather win the Kea tacky Derby than any oilier racing fixture in this country -barring, probably, the Futurity. This year he has two strings to his bow .Midway and Treviseo. and he is omitting nothing that might fit the colts and condition them tar the big race. Today he sent Trevisco a mile, the Irish eoit reeling off the distance in 1 :5£, this being his initial gallop at the distance. Trainer Young is not taking any chances of having either colts going wrong through overtraining, therefore he is going along slowly in their preparation. Midway has been an rked three-quarters and seven eighths and will Mas be ready for a trial : I one mile. Roamer s Half -Sister Is Promising-. There is not probably 1 three -year-ail on the local tracks that has grown and spread out within the pant mouth more than the filly Boeewoed, a half sister to Beamer, that Mr. Young is preparing for the spring season. This filly shewed abundant speed in her two-year-old races, and it would appear that she will be formidable in anj company she meets this year. Trainer Jack Cldsborough hid Andrew Miflerl crack long distance reamer Reamer measared a few days ago. and was surprised to find that 1 1 j « - horse had grown an inch since last fall, ami this, in spite of the fact that he is now six years obi. all age at which most horses are popularly sup] .,., ,i to have long siine attained their full growth. The horse now stands fifteen hands and three inches. Trainer .1. .1. Flanagan had Manister Ted. Kmil Hera Di rhy • Ugihle, was out on the track this morn-tag for the first time sine, he was turn d over to his care. lie sent the sou id Santoi three-eighths through the homestretch, and was most favorably-impressed by tin- Colts easy method of nmaing. lie has an easy stride . and rims close to the ground. Flanagan says the call will be a sure starter in the Derby, and that in all probability Frank Rough. whose contract Ben sold to J. E. Whteaer, would have the mount. Keegh rode Short Grass in all id his raees last year, and Men thinks highly of his skill as a pilot. W. E. Phillips, who serves .-is patrol judge on the tracks at Louisville and also at Latonia. has arrived here from his home in St. Louis. lie expects to resume his official duties when the local season h gins. Dr. .. M. Miller of Detroit has arrived at Douglas Park, with the foiir-yeai -old For Fair, which be campaigned at New Orleans and Hot Springs. This is the only horse la- owns, bat he is on the leok-oat for some- .,,.,1 twa-year-oMs. Ex-Jockey Carroll shilling has reached the Downs after an indifferent season at Tijuana, earning Tower and Biddy, which he need in the west, are due to arrive sleuth. il has taken up the five-year-old Kephthys. and a fUly by Isador Midas, that had been tamed e,ut at Latbaia.
