ONE TEST FOR HORSE— THE RACE COURSE. Governor Stanley, in presenting to Jefferson Livingston the Camden Trophy, an exquisite silver cup, after his English-bred horse Colonel Vennie won the Camden Handicap at Lexington last Saturday, laid particular stress on the importance of the thoroughbred horse in time of war and asserted that, while there are several tests for men. there is only one test for the horse — the race course. "Every man who is born in Kentucky is proud to be a Kentuckian." said Governor Stanley, "and if he is the owner of a thoroughbred horse that is capable of defeating other thoroughbred horses, as your thoroughbred horse bus just done, then he is doubly proud, but in this instance you, who are not a Kentuckian, have defeated Kentuckians with a thoroughbred from across the water — an English thoroughbred — and Kentuckians, ever generous in their losing, wish you the sweets that go with victory. This is a time when the United States is calling her men and her horses to her defense in battle. There are several tests for the men. but there is only one test for the horse. That test is the race course — that is the only way we can correctly determine the qualities possessed by these animals. In war the horse is just as essential to the soldier as is his gun. When we of Kentucky shall send to the firing line our courageous men on noble thoroughbred horses, we will have that feeling of supreme confidence that we have contributed in no small measure to the victory that will perch upon the banner of our nation."
