STRAIGHT FORWARD FIRST. TAKES THE ONLY STAKE RACE OF THE DAY AT SARATOGA. An Ordinary ""Racing Card Leads to Decreased Attendance Julialeon Wins a Fast Run Race Gossip of the Track. P.y .T. L. Dempsey. Saratoga,. X-. Y., August. 23. The. Mohawk Stakes, under selling conditions. at one mile, which featured u light raring offering tliis afternoon, resulted in a victory for the outstanding favorite Straight Forward, carrying the colors of R. T. Wilson. The stake was worth ,450. Straight Forwards success was only accomplished after a hard stretch drive to wear down Harry Shannon. The latter, after disposing of Woodtrap. appeared the probable winner when rounding into the stretch, but he tired a bit. in the last sixteenth and Straight Forward, responding well to punishment, sot up near the end. There were only four starters in the race and as the conditions had a selling clause, the winner was subject to sale, but was given no advance over the ,200. he was in for. Compared to the big nuriiber of starters that have been in some of the races, todays fields in the various dashes were of small size and contributed to a lessening of the crowding that lias frequently been so apparent. Favorites Bowled Over with Regularity. Backers. of favorites did not fare in extra good fashion, for. with the exception, of Straight Forward and Frederick the Great, the other choices were bowled over with regularity. The worst overthrow came with the defeat of Polroma in the second race., which succumbed to the rush of Dorcas in the last sixteenth of the mile dash. Polroma was given weighty consideration and his failure cost his owner a tidy sum, likewise the horse, for ha was claimed by W. Smith for ,350. The claiming men were also active in the closing race, in which some ordinary ones . made the contest with Queen of the Sea. beaten badly in her last start and claimed by W. H. Pearce and subsequently sold to B. AVilliams, she was an easJ- winner. She was in for 00 and immediately three claims were lodged for her. W. Garth, acting for Hal Parr, her former owner, accompanied his claim with ,575; B. Williams Was ,005 and W. II. Pearce got the mare for .Sl.lttM!. Dan was the favorite in the race, but showed a dull performance and was claimed by J. .Ti Moran for ,050. Reyeler, owned by the Glenn Kiddle Farm, was the medium for bidders attention after he had scored, in the . initial dash that brought together fair two-year-olds. He was entered for ,400 and was bid up to ,000, but was bought in by his connections with the customary advance. Trainer Max Hirscli started a speedy three-year-old in his filly Julialeon. which shared joint favoritism with Queen Errant in the third race. Julialeon displayed; a high flight of speed and won cantering from Queen of the Water, witli Queen Errant in third place. -After the race trainer Hirsch stated that he would reserve Julialeon for breeding and would in all probability send her soon to Kentucky, where site is to be mated with Dick Finnell. Acting for a wealthy eastern sportsman, J. L. Dethpsey today bought from George J. Long, the filly Kathleen. .Marshal Cassidy, who is chief assistant for his father. Starter Cassidy, was today .notified of his exemption for military service. Emil Herz to Race at Latonia. Emil Heres horses will be shipped . to Latonia for the meeting there after the close of Aqueduct racing. They will again be wintered at Louisville. James McClellands youngsters including the 0,000 Viilcain Rosetree II. colt, will be transfered to Kentucky shortly and, be trained by Kim Patterson. Trainer W. J. Young will ship all his horses excepting F.seoba, back to Lexington next week. The crack Alexander colt will be transferred to Belmont Park and start in the Futurity. Edward Trotter lias decided to suspend Bromos racing until next year. He holds the horse in high regard ami thinks that the long rest will bring Iiiin to his top form. Cum Sail, regarded by trainer Max Hirsch as the superior to his stable mate Papp. has been put liyck in training and will gradually be fitted to :ompete in some of the fall stakes, including the Queen City Championship Stakes to be run at Latonia next fall and which, it is thought, will determine the best in the two-year-old brigade. -H. R. Bradleys horses are intended for shipment to Kentucky as soon as a car is available. Arrivals today from Jacksonville brought the news of Fred Auerbachs marriage to Miss May Gallagher of Cincinnati. Auerbach is still interested in the Charleston track and has hopes of a revival of racing in" the Florida metropolis. ,John W. Schorr will ship King Olympian and 3inehiirst to Kentucky, to be turned out until next spring. The fourteen horses intended for Kentucky racing liy A. K. Macomber, were shipped to Louisville f last night. Trainer T. Murphy, who will have them under his care, will leave for Louisville tomorrow. Jefferson Livingston came up from. New York this morning to take in a. few days racing and will return to New York Sunday.
