READY. FOR AUTUMN RACING. HORSES RESTING AT BENNING AWAITING OPENING OF MARYLAND MEETINGS. Sixty-eight Days of Sport Provided at - Havre do Grace, Laurel, Pimlico and Bowie Many Improvements Nearing Completion. . , " By George B. Morris. , Washington. I. C, August 23. With the fall meet-itigs in Maryland but a few weeks away, horsemen , now quartered at. Beuniug and who have been resting up their horses since the end of the racing in Canada, are ready for the Havre de Grace meeting, which begins on September 11. - Beginning with the racing at the Harford County course, Maryland will have a continuous fall meeting until late in November. Following Havre de Grace comes Pimlico for a seventeen-dav meeting, tien Laurel during the entire month of October, and then Bowie winding up the season so far as Maryland is concerned. The Laurel management has made vast improvements on its plant during the summer. The course is now in excellent condition. In fact, racing could be started there tomorrow. Harry F. Breivogel, assistant to General Manager Matt J. Winn, is expected in Laurel in a few days to make preparations for the fall meeting. Tlie track has been banked up from -the head of the stretch to the- wire and tlie drainage system, now finished, is said to be the best 05 its kind in the country. As a rule Laurel has fine weather during the month of October, but to prevent any possible heavy downpour of rain interfering with the course the management has constructed this svstem of drainage. The club house has taken on a number of improvements and the course is now one of the prettiest garden spots in Maryland. General Manager James F. OHara of the Southern Maryland Fair and Agricultural Society has had a force of men working all summer getting the Bowi course into condition. Many new improvements have been made and t lie track- appears, in fine condition. Ihe inaimgement-is hopeful or having a -"fjpiir. line: oven the Pennsylvania railroad run direct "to-tin course by the time nicing begins at tlie Prince Georges County track. New Orleans Racing After Bowie Meeting. , Much- favorable comment was heard this . week When word reached liere that James F. OHara and G. D. Bryan had secured the controlling interest in the new track in New Orleans. It is the intention of these two gentlemen to have racing begin in few Orleans directly after the close of the Bowiu njeeting, or in other words, on Thanksgiving day. Messrs. OHara and G. D. Bryan are the most popular racing men in Maryland. Both are of an unassuming nature and are willing at all times to lend a hand to horsemen when they -most need a friend. James Dew, private secretary to James F. OHara, will probably go to New Orleans to act in the same capacity and the officials will be the same as thosa tiiat act at -the Bowie course. Steeplechaslng will be one of the attractions at the Havre de Grace, Pimlico and Laurel tracks this fall. The public has come to demand that an event of this character shall be run off each. day. There is -plenty of steeplechase material in training now, especially in Airginla, from where a large number of "timber toppers" will be shipped for the fall meeting. They have been carefully schooled for these meetings-and there should be some excellent racing. War Will Not Affect Racing. In all probability the war will not have any noticeable effect on racing in these parts, as the quota that has been drawn from Washington, Bal-f-timore and contiguous points is not large enough to materially affect the racing in any manner. Washington has always . been known : as one of the best racing centers in the country, and this fact lias been demonstrated time and again when the Ilorse nicing lovers of the nations capital send a lhrge delegation to the races. Washington looks .upon racing as one of the years social events, and society folk turns out en masse. The railroad facilities to all the courses are good, especially to Laurel course, where the steam roads . make the lun in less than twenty five minutes. It was stated by officials that nearly all the Ijigh-class horses now at Saratoga will be raced :lt the Maryland courses this fall. Omar Khayyam is among those that will contest in several of the large stakes. ; Richard F. Carman, the Washington horseman, lias a large string at the Kenning course. Dr. J. S. Tyree also has a formidable stable here, liesides those racing at Saratoga now. Dr. Tyree, whose leiilth has beeii bad for some time, is reported to lie improving and his many friends wish him a speedy recovery. Dr. Tyree races his horses for the love Of the sport, as he is an ardent horseman, and when llis health permits he is always at the course. His stable is being managed by Bernie Larrick, who lias made a big success of it this year. He started lint with the Tyree string at Havre de Grace last fall and has annexed many races since tills meeting.
