MAKING ENTRIES IN HOPEFUL SPIRIT Important English Stake Races Closed for as Far . in the Future as 1920, The "Racing Calendar" of Thursday last is the most bulky wo have seen for many weeks, and its appearance in something approaching its former dimensions may be accepted as of happy augury for the future of racing. ,At all events, there are published the entries for important stakes up to 1920, including tlie Spring Stakes, the July Stakes, and the Chesterfield Stakes at headquarters, the Richmond Stakes and Gordon Stakes at Goodwood, and the Ormonde Stakes at Chester, all in 1918, the Derby and Oaks of 1019, as well as the Warwickshire Breeders Foitl Plate at Birmingham, the IIome-Bred Threc-Yeaf-Old Cup at Gatwick, the Leicestershire Oaks, and Wistow Hall Breeders Foal. Plate at Leicester and the Coronation Stakes and St. James Palace1 Stakes: at Ascot in that year, and in 1920 the Midland Breeders Foal Plate and the Guernsey Stud Produce Stakes at Birmingham, and the Red Kose Stakes .at Manchester. How familiar niost of those names are to us, and yet,, nevertheless, how far away in tho past tftej seem to bo, under war-time conditions. Most of the events have fared fairly well in respect to the number of subscriptions, aiid the Derby and Oaks of 1919 have not done so badly, everything considered, with 234 and 193 nominations respectively, though these figures, of course, fall far short of those- associated with the period immediately preceding the war. Races, to Be Run This Year. Whether any of tlie 1918 stakes referred to will be run for, is a matter which must continue to remain extremely doubtful, as even were the war to come to a conclusion getween now and the end of the year, -it would not be altogether easy to reorganize immediately the customary .series of racing fixtures. .It affords, at least, however, some satisfaction to look forward, through these lists of entries, Jo a general resumption, which it must be the fervent hope of T everyone interested in the national sport will soon become an accomplished fact, as this would Imply the consummation of the victoty upon wldch depends, .the future of Great Britain and. her Allies.,; Of greater immediate interest than any of the -entries to .which I have already referred are those for the Champion Stakes at the Second October meeting this year, and the Jockey Club Cup and Dewhurst Plate at the Houghton gathering. The Ghamiiion Stakes, as usual, will be decided "Across the Flat" a mile and a quarter and witlr T.O.OO sovereigns added to a 50 sovereigns sweepstakes, wJH 09 well wortli winning. There nrj in the present instance nineteen entries seni6rity amongst which is" held by the Cesare-.witch winner, Sanctum, now five years old. Horses "of the succeeding generation are represented by Phalarls, Fifinelm, "Nassovian, Bosket and Grosvenor. while the three-year-old section includes both Derby -and. Oaks, winners, ,Gay Crusader and. Sunny Jane, as" well as Dafk Legend, Athdara, Hainnult, Telephns, Brown- Prince, Molly Desmond, Brigand, Hampshire Lily, Kingston Black, Invincible and Planet, In every respect., therefore, the Champion Stakes entry is, well worthy of the. traditions associated with that vent. Nassovian in the Cup. With regard to the Jockey Club , Cup, it is also to be said that the entry Is, a, satisfactory one. I had hoped that Hurry On would have progressed sufficiently well to be- included amongst the candidates; but his name is missing, and the- only absolutely proved stayer in the list is Sanetuui, unless, of course, there, are others amongst the sealed nominations of Mr; W. M..G. .Singer, Mr. J. A. de Rothschild and, Mr. II. Ellis. Fl.f ineB.it, Nassovian, Bosket and Lady. Mluta are tjie four-year-olds engaged, while the three.-year-old . section is composed of Dark Legend, Lisimlinehy,. Brown. Prince, Stim-inoner, Count Warbler, Dansellon, First Flier, Colleger, Dresden and Grizzel Grim. Again, therefore, one may express gratification at the constitution :of the entry, though we are, so far as positive proof is concerned, deficient-at present in stayers of the highest "class. "Augur" an London Sporting Life. .
