RICKETY IMPROVING WITH RACING H. P. Whitneys Good Three-Year-Old Will Be Hard Colt to Beat Before End of Season. By .t. it .Teffery. Saratoga, N. Y., August 23. With Omar Khayyam out of the way, Harry Payne Whitneys good colt Rickety, which had been playing second fiddle to the champion in several of his recent races, had .things pretty much his own way in Tuesdays renewal of the Huron Handicap. Jockey F. Robinson, who is anything but a good post rider, got the colt away in a tangle, but gave him gilt-edged handling thereafter and the son of Broomstick, after gamely overcoming tho early disadvantage to which lie was subjected, cantered home an easy winner. It was Rickotys second important stake success of the year, his last preceding victory having been secured in the Emylre City Derby July 21. He was second to Oniar Khayyam in the Travers Stakes and Brooklyn Derby, second to Hourlcss in the Withers Stakes and third to Camyfire and Strom -boll in the Toboggan Handicap, in which he made his first start of the year on the New York tracks, after having, run uuplaeed to Omar Khayyam, Ticket and Midway" in the Kentucky Derby, for which race, in which he was making his initial start as a three-yearrold. It is evident, in view of later developments, that lie was. not keyed up, as he fell back after having taken the lead in the middle running. Rickety is not far behind Omar Khayyam and Uonrless when at his best, but it has been clearly demonstrated that they both have the edge on him. . Who Got the Best of tho Transaction? Former jockey Willie Travers was elated when W. C. Clancy, also a former jockey, claimed Master McGratli from liim out of the first race yesterday for ,020. It appears that there is little love lost between the two and Travers has an idea that lie got the best of the transaction, claiming that Master McGratU bowed one. of his tendons: in a work-out Sunday and that his new owner will have his troubles in getting the horse to the post in winning condition. It was one of those French claiming rule races in which claims are filed before the .race and all horses so claimed are withdrawn. It was not until he had been served with official notice that the horse had been claimed that Travers removed the bandages from his horses legs and : revealed the bowed tendon. Clancy took possession of the horse and led him away to his stable, apparently as well satisfied with his purchase as Travers was over the transaction. It transpires that King Herods disappointing race behind Meteorite on Monday was due to the popping out of an osselet during the running of the race. This explains why the son of Colin retired so precipitately from forward contention after going well for three-quarters. The mishap will result in the enforced absence of the colt from the races while corrective measures are resorted to. Trainer D. R. McDaniel figures that he will be able to get King Herod back to the races for the Laurel meeting in Maryland. The blistering process will be relied upon to overcome I hi trouble. It is learned that there Is no likelihood of a meeting between Omar Khayyam and Hourless before the. running of the Lawrence Realization Stakes at Belmont Park next mouth. Mr. Belmonts crack colt is being, particularly pointed for tliti Important race by trainer S. C. Hildreth.
