DOUBTFUL OVER JUVENILE SUPREMACY No Two -Year-Old So Far tliis Year Has Proven His Right to Championship Honors. By Ed Cole: Saratoga, X. Y., August 23. Quite a number of good two-year-olds have been. shown since the opening of the Saratoga meeting. One fir two have been pretty well tried before -coming here, but they proved since their arrival that they are entitle.d to consideration in almost any company. Some have only graduated from the maideii class., recently, but they will tell their stories later on, when-matched against youngsters that have been well thought of all year. Taking them in order of merit. Sun Briar lias proved that he is the master oyer this track, with Papp following. This is really the oiily pair, with the possible exception of Rosie OGrajly, that can, up to the present, be designated in the first division. It is probable, however, they will all meet contention later on,, when they get to Belmont Park and Aqueduct. Sim Briars ..rings" will trouble him without question when, he gets to the harder tracks; at least that is the opinion of all experts. Papps race of last week AVednesday would indicate to the layman" that" he has doiie a good years work and is showing it, yet his trainer Max Hirsch, who is unquestionably better acquainted witli the disposition and fitness of the Colt, than an. outsider, says that he is just as good as- he ever was and will prove it. As for Rosie OGrady, she met with trouble in her last race when beaten by Olive AVood and Enfilade in the SpinnwaJ- Stakes. Hut for the interference she would Purely have. been much closer to the leaders. In. fact, if the race were to be run over again there is little question but that she would be the choice in the market. This is the opinion of the handicappers and iirice makers. Consequently, Hosie - OGrady- "is deemed" the .best- of the young fillies so far. Debadou Should Graduate from -Maiden -Ranks. As for the heretofore " maidens shown. "Ralih,. Subahdar and Debadou are distinctively the pick, and they are mighty fine horses.. .Debadou is still in the maiden division-but is dut to graduate at any time. lie might have won on Monday had jockey F. Robinson got him away from the post in decent fashion". Yet-tlni,wiJner of- the. race,. Subahdar, is a i"olt of goodly appearance and one that will.jiurely. iluproVe" as -JreTiges. Het1f"iH?miriiffn tf DelltP Runaway Girl apd bears sonic resemblance to his sire, lie is one of the horses recently turned over to James Corrigan by Price McKlnney, his former-partner, and is of the Wickliffe Stable breeding. This stable has shown some- useful horses of late, Kahu being another. .Diversion has also loomed into prominence more than once. Appearances indicate that Mr. COrrigai.is stable is just rounding to and that Oscar Lewisohn, who is aiding Mr. Corrigan in the management of the big string of horses, is rendering good advice in all departments in conjunction with the earnest attention of trainer John Whalen. who is sending the horses to the post in good condition. Mr. Lewisohn has great regard for Subahdar. He sees the shadows of greater honors for this horse looming up and lie is. not alone iirhis opinion, there being every indication in Subnbdars conformation of his steady improvement. Nothing would be more pleasing to the frjeTids of .Mr. Corrigan .than, to .see his colors prominent, as the Wickliffe Stable is entitled to a champion after the enormous expenditure of money and time by Mr. Corrigan and Mr. Me-Kinney to get the best breeding- and racing, .material in the country. If Subahdar should run a respectable race in the Futurity, nothing would bemOre gratifying to all concerned. Disappoints in Two -Year-Old Division. There have been some disappointments in the two-year-old division, "among which are Approval and El Plaudit. The Schwartz Brothers, M. Xi. and A. C, were sanguine that Approval would develop into a good horse. His private trials were so encouraging that he was considered the best horse in the barn, even better , than Enfilade. That, he -has not lived up to his. work is sliown in his races.- Perhaps it is the euppy going of -the Saratoga track that has caused the slump, and again lie. may be a morning glory. There is surely something- wrong somewhere, as a. colt with -his speed could hardly fall so far behind "anticipations unless there was cause. It is only a question of finding- out the trouble. " El Plaudit was looked -upon by W. H. Karrick his trainer as a possible stiike proposition. He, has shown speed and in hisJast effort on Monday had every opportunity to redeem-himself, yist he failed miserably. In his case it also may be the-peculiur nature of the. Saratoga track that applies There may lie some great changes lir the running; of the two-year-olds when Belmont-Park is reached, as -the-Saratoga track lias favored some of them in a decided manner, while it lias, been detrimental to others. 1 - .--, :
