RUMOR OF RACE COURSE IN VIRGINIA Prominent Washingtonian Beported to Be Interested in Project Many Horses at Benning. AVashington, D. C, September 4. Considerable talk has been heard of late in this city regarding the building or rebuilding of a new mile course in Airginia, to be located someAAhere near Alexandria, and that a prominent AVashingtou-ian is interested in the new project. Little credence is given tiie report here as a story of a similar character Avas preAalent here last year. However, this time it seems to be based on better authority than before. A race track in Airginia Avould attract about the same people as patronize the Maryland tracks and no doubt Avould be a success. Rumor has it that if the course is built it will be devoted partly to steeplechasing. Airginia is well-known as a great state for raising and training steeplechasers and should the course materialize no doubt Airginia AA-ould be well represented by the best class of people the state affords. It should be a great racing year in Maryland, as there are a plentiful supply of good horses in training. It will be remembered last year there Avas a shortage of racing material, owing to the bad spring Aveather, and those that AAere in condition to race Avere raced so hard all during the summer that they AAere of little use in the fall. However, it Avill not be this Avay this fall, as there are enough horses in AVashington and Baltimore to start racing at any of the Maryland courses without waiting for those now racing around New York. There are noAV quartered at the old Benning track in the neighborhood of 200 horses, which are awaiting the bugle call in Maryland. They include horses from the stables of R. F. Carman, Dr. J. S. Tyree I and many other AveU-knowu horsemen.
