BERLIN WINNER IN CLOSE FINISH Beats Kinney in Last Twenty Yards in Maplewood Handicap at St. Louis. St. Louis, Mo.,. September 5. Balmy weather and track conditions that could not be improved upon for the seventh day at Maxwclton Park, induced another large gathering to turn out. The card included the Maplewood Handicap, for all ages, at three-quarters, which was the feature. J. S. Ward furnished the winner in Berlin, which just managed to overhaul Kinney, the pacemaker, in the last twenty yards. Dick Williams, owner Perkins representative, was far back for the first half, but closed up with a rush to take the short end of the purse. . " For the Algonquin purse, the second race and for three-year-olds, II. Perkins furnished the win- . ner in Phocion, which was away fast and spread-eagled his opponents to win as his rider pleased. The sixtli race brought out some fair platers and Toddling was returned the winner, after acting fractiously and delaying the start. He quickly stole a big lead, which he retained to the end. Jockey Crump, who was set down by starter Dade, will ride Thursday.
