CHURCHILL DOWNS BIG POTATO CROP Infield Planted in Spuds Last Spring Expected to Yield About 4,500 Bushels. Louisville, Ky., September Si. Just what disposition will le made of the immense potato crop that will be harvested in the Churchill Downs infield about a month hence has not yet been decided upon by the officials of the New Louisville Jockey Club, who had the ground planted in potatoes last June as its share in relieving the food shortage. It was announced at that time that the entire crop would be presented to the government and this decision will be adhered to, but in what manner the presentation will 10 made has "not yet been decided upon. Whether to turn over the potatoes to the government or sell them in the open market and donate the entire proceeds to-Uncle Sam is a matter that will be taken up later on. It has been suggested that the club turn over the entire crop to the Quartermasters Department to help feed the 40,000 troops of the National Army that will shortly be encamped at Fort Taylor, near this city. Track Superintendent Thomas Young, in charge of the big potato patch, declares the crop will be the finest ever harvested in this part of the state, lie has close to thirty acres under cultivation and . the plants present a beautiful sight from the grandstand. They have done remarkably well, considering tho dry spell of the early summer. The seed alone cost ,000 and it is estimated that the crop will yield something like 4,500 bushels. With potatoes selling at from .50 to a- bushel, it can be seen what a neat sum could be realized from their sale. Col. Winn is immensely pleased with the idea of using the Downs infield for patriotic purposes, and intends to repeat the scheme next spring.
