BALLY SHOCKS HIS FRIENDS Succumbs to Beaverkill in BeJ-mont Parks -Main Race. Stargazer Wins Mr..- Macomber His First Race of the Meeting -Futurity Riders.: ." By F. J. Ortell. New York, September 7. James Butlers good three-year-old Bally gave the public an unexpected shock at the Belmont Park course this afternoon, when he was defatcd by S. M. Hendersons Beaverkill, in the mile andan eighth , race,. .that, featured an off days program. The Butler colt raced into a quick lead and simply ran away from his opponents in the early running, but swerved out badly at the heart of the stretch and in the racing down the straightaway, the diminutive Lykes was unable to keep him straight. All through the final eighth he was bearing sharply to the outside and, despite the ground thus lost, was only beaten by a slight margin. Beaverkill, skillfully saved in the early racing, was next to the inner rail for the. entire way and took a clear lead in the stretch, but was doing his best at the end. Second in interest to the feature was the three-quarters dash, which brought about the first victory of the meeting for A. K. Macomber, when Stargazer proved an easy winner. The son of Star Shoot took the lead shortly after the barriers rise, never to be headed. .."V Z tZ- . At a meeting of the license committee oft the Jockey Club, jockey T. McTaggart was "granted a hearing, but no decision has been handed down , by the body. Though Moosehead bore the colors of John E.: Madden in the opening dash, he raced in the interest of C. M.- Garrison, who purchased the youngster before the race. W. L. Oliver and Jake Byer were among the arrivals from Havre de Grace for a brief stay. MACOMBER TO BE REPRESENTED IN: CUBA It is reported that the A. K. Macomber, Stable will be represented at" .the- Oriental Farkmeetihg In Havana next winter. The E. M. Weld jumpers in charge of J. Ker-math. will campaign at the Piping Rock and Belmont Park meeting. Condition books for the first nine days of the; Aqueduct fall meeting have been issued and the work of racing secretary Fred RehberRer; is meeting general approval among horsemen. W. Knapp has returned from Binghampton, where he journeyed to participate in the Labor Day parade held in honor of Willis Siarpe Kilmers Hopeful winner, Sun Briar. He reported Henry McDaniel t had gone to Saratoga Springs to ship the remainder of the Kilmer racers, including the good three-year-old Tom McTaggart, to Laurel where they , will rest for the October meeting at that track.if Matt J. Winn, general manager of the Laurel track, was an arrival from that village during the day and reports the entire course in excellent order for the fall meeting. It has been found necessary to construct 200 additional stalls to meet the demands of horsemen, while the track proper has also been greatly improved. A new top dressing has been added to serve as a better and safer cushion for weak-legged horses. Manager Winn reports that 200 horses are at present quartered at the track awaiting the opening on October 1. The management has been gratified to note that stake nominations exceed those of 1916 by 400. Here are the jockeys who will ride in the. Fur turity: On Escoba, W. Knapp; on Papp, L. Williams; Rahu, A. Schuttinger; Star Class, T. Davies. Jockey J. McTaggart was suspended for three days ,by the stewards for rough riding in the second race.
