CLOSE FINISHES AT CHEYENNE TRACK Threatening Weather Diminishes the Attendance-Royal Tea Fails at Odds-On. Cheyenne, Wyo., September 7. Unsettled weather early, with heavy clouds, had a tendency to make the patronage only fair today. It was the final free day of the meeting for the ladies and quite a number accepted the hospitality of the association, but came out late as the sun shone brightly. The card was only fair, but the cheap horses made stirring finishes, many of them coming down to the finish in hard drives and only noses arid heads apart. The finish in the fourth race was quite exciting, as General Pickett came with a whirlwind rush in the last eighth and forced jockey Gross to go fo his whip on Mineral Jim to outstay him. Royal Tea was made an odds-on choice, but lie had enough a sixteenth from tho finish and quit badly. The majority of the winners during the afternoon paid liberal dividends. Lew Bearwald, formerly a big bookmaker at Oakland, stopped over today to enjoy the racing on his way from San Francisco to New York. Joe Frank was sold this morning by Irwin Bros, to C. C. Phillips and ran in his colors today.
