THEYRE OFF AT LEXINGTON Brilliant Opening of Kentucky Association Fall Meeting. King Gorin Defeats Midway in Main Race of Day Close Finishes Feature Racing. By J. L. Dempsey. Lexington, Ky., September 12. Kentuckys fall racing was ushered in this afternoon over the Lexington track, with an attendance that filled every available vantage point of the plant and among the spectators were persons prominent in business, political, social and the turf world. A better setting for the sport and an auspicious opening could not be Imagined, resulting in interesting anil immensely enjoyed sport. The contests in the different dashes were hard fought from the barrier rise and finishes in most instances were of the variety that left room for doubt us to the winner, until the official placing was displayed. Secretary Shelleys effort to bring out the better grade of horses at the course -was fruitful and the starters in most of the races were of the star variety. The principal race, the Phoenix Hotel Handicap, at a mile and a sixteenth, developed an upset through the defeat of J. W. Parishs Midway. He was regarded with high favor and flattered extensively for three-quarters, but tired and fell back to finish in third place. The winner turned up in this years Kentucky Handicap victor King Gorin, which conceding actual weight to the others, scored ia decisive fashion over the neglected Sands of Pleasure. King Gorin was ridden by Mack Garner, who is now under contract to R. L. Baker. He waited with his mount ."until over the trying hill, but once straightened away for the stietrh sprint, mowed down his opponents in game style and had plenty of speed in ; reserve at the end. The sport began with a sterling victory for E. 11: Bradleys crack Blind Bagghge over some highly tried ones, that included Marion Goosby and Pan Zareta. During the early racing lie gave his backers considerable concern by his failure to display his accustomed high speed, but be gained steadily in the stretcli and won from Marion Goosby in the last sixteenth. Trainer J. 0. Milam uncovered a crack in Sen-ator Johnson N. Camdens first-time starter, Everest, which won as his rider pleased from eleven other maiden colts starting in the fifth race. Sedan furnished an upset when he took the measure of Squeeler in the sixtli and Hie closing dash also was productive of an overthrew by the success of Valor, which beat Cheer Leader after a hard drive. Jockeys Andress and Shilling were each suspended for a period of three days by the starter for disobedience at the post. CANDIDATES FOR BREEDERS FUTURITY. Track superintendent James P. Ross was advised by telegram this afternoon from trainer Max Hirscli that Papp and Escoba had been loaded and were now en route here to engage in the Breeders Futurity on the closing day of this meeting. Col. W. E. Applegate, who is here also, stated tliat after his start tomorrow, Jack Hare Jr. would be shipped here also to fill his Futurity engagement. Truiner Ed Moore also announced his intention this afternoon to send Hollinger to the post in the Futurity. The latter is a half-brother to Horron and Is owned by D. Raymond of Nashville. John Hachmeister came over from Louisville to witness the opening. He reports that the request for stabling room at Douglas Park has exceeded capacity at this plant and superintendent Nolte is at his wits ends how to take care of the applicants. P. M. Civill lias arranged to take up the four horses he had turned out and will begin their training with a view to campaigning them next winter. 11. Neusteter was among the arrivals today from St. Louis with his horses. Jockey Bolton accompanied the stable. E, Q.
