STARGAZER WINS THE MANHATTAN Meteorite a Hot Favorite, but Runs Unplaced Aileen 0. Scores in the Opening Dash. New York, September 12. Conditions were much more agreeable at Belmont Park this afternoon for the enjoyment of outdoor sport than during the preeeeding two days. The patronage was in keeping with the improved state of the weather, which was ideal for racing. The Manhattan Handicap of ,000 added, which served as the days headliner, went to the credit of the Macomber stable, when Stargazer outflnished J. E. "Wideners Chiclet, after the two had dominated the running throughout. John Sanfords Meteorite was installed first choice for the race, on the strength of his series of successes in four preceding starts, but Avas unable to cope with the stronger opposition to which he attempted to concede weight and the finisli found him unplaced in spite of jockey Robinsons energetic efforts to improve his position in the stretch, where; lie moved up into forward contention, after having been outpaced in the earlier running. In the opening race which was for two-year-olds fillies, the apprentice rider J. Wessler, demonstrated that he is a promising saddle prospect by the manner in which he piloted J. J. Morans Alleen O. to a well earned victory over Wood Violet, for which there had been staunch support. It was only a day or two ago that Wessler rode his first winning nice on First Ballot. The scratching of Florida left only J. E. Wideners French -bred Jumper Plaisir D Amour and Samuel Willets Peg O My Heart to contest the steeplechase. The latter fell in front of the clubhouse in the first turn of the field just as the Widener standard bearer moved up to her. Her rider escaped serious injury although temporally knocked out. Plaisir DAmour is a fine looking horse and may develop into a good juniper. He fenced poorly in the early part of todays race but improved as the race progressed and was going well when his only opponent was eliminated, lie is said to be one of the best jumping prospects in the powerful Widener Stable. He went wrong last spring after showing up well in his preliminary training and only now has trainer J. Howard Lewis, who is one of the most skillful of the steeplechase trainers been able to get him back to the races. August Belmonts good filly Masda was held in esteem for the "two-year-old allowance race, but Fragonard, admirably ridden, by J. Lof tusK took her measure at the end of a well sustained drive after she had obtained a long early lead. Jockey Petz had his troubles again today on Lady Little. She acted badly, throwing him over her head in one of her bucking whims. Two dnys ago Nashville had him down a half dozen times. Petz now lias a reputation, for gnmeness of one hundred per cent.
