ENGLANDS LAST BIG "RACE OF YEAR Manchester November Handicap Won by Planet Before an Enormous Crowd. Englands flat racing season of the present year came to an end at Manchester, Saturday, November 17. For- next year many more, racing days have been granted by the government than was the case in 1917. The principal feature of the one-day meeting at .Manchester was the gunning of the Manchester November Handicap, at a mile and a half, which was contested over a sticky track by seventeen good handicap horses. It was won by Louis AAjnans three-year-old bay colt. Planet, by St. Frusquin Catgut, in 2:10, with 113 pounds up. Mr. Northbrookos three.-year-61d bay colt. Go On, by Little Flutter-You Go Off, 103 pounds, was second,- and Maj. R. L. Kidstons bay horse, Aer-scliot. six, years old, by St. Brendan Hoopqo, lid pounds, was tliird. The Cambridgeshire winner, Brown Prince, with J22 pounds up and well bucked, was one of the fourteen unplaced horses, Mr. AViu-aus, although not fortunate generally in racing, has been lucky in connection with the Manchester November Handicap, having wen it before the war with Aalet aud the - American horse. Dalmatian. Concerning, the day nnd the big raev, London Sporting Life oft the n8xt morning said:- "The flat racing season of 1917 came to a brilliantly successful end, ut Manchester on Saturday, when the. .multitude of visitors were fortunate enough to be favored with far better weather than has often been experienced there at this period of the year. The; morning was dismal in the extreme, being dull and. misty, with a drizzling rain, but after the first race the. atmosphere became much clearer and most . of. the running was plaiilly visible. HUGE CROWD IN ATTENDANCE. "The extensive range of stands at Castle Irwelt was, with the exception of that confined to members, packed with a denser throng than was even In evidence on August Bank Holiday, and it would be as Just to -describe the mass as n yellow one as the moru sombre line associated with winter, as it really appeared- its though kh.tki predominated everywhere. The popularityof. the -Manchester November Handicap as a medium for speculation has never been more clearly demonstrated, and the I gentleman iras .s,ugges.ted in the House of Com mons the other day that racing was against the public sentiment at the present time would have found ample evidence of the falsity of his ideas had he been one of the visitors. "The going was not heavy, as it so often is here, being merely sticky, and only a few of the days competitors showed signs of being unable to. act on it. As those who are acquainted with the course know, the start for the big race takes place immediately opposite the stands, and as the light was never better than when the horses were awaiting the send-off, an excellent view of this part of the proceedings was available. To take events in their proper order, however, it is necessary to state that all seventeen horses indicated in the Sporting Life us probable starters went to the post. There was a change in the riding arrangements of the Lordship Farm horses, Mr. AAinans first jockey, Lancaster, being assigned the mount on Planet, while Madden had the handling of Race Rock, PLANET MUCH FANCIED. "It quickly became apparent that the Cambridgeshire second was mucl fancied indeed, lie deposed his Newmarket conqueror from the position of favorite, and unsurped that position himself, as little as 3 to 1 being accented at one period. Aerschot also held his own firmly in the market, the three horse named being the only ones to be backed at less than 10 to 1. Go On. Kingston Black and Bosket were rather troublesome before the start was effected, .but Mr. Joe 3Iarh got them away well together, and the failure of Kingston Black to leave with the rest was his own fault, as he whipped round when the tapes went up. and only went on a few hundred yards before being pulled up. "Right down the fur stretch John Jaekett held the lead, but before turning into the straight this had been wrested from him by Go Op, which in turn, however, could not resist the challenge of Planet, when Lancaster sent his mount out to win. This the son of St. Frusquin Catgut did easily indeed., and Go On was just as easily second best from Aerschot. Others t6 run well were Patricks Day and The Aizier. but it wiw iu reality a one- horse affair some dlstnnro from honnt. Brown Priniv never appeared Ut the least likely to repeat his victories of tht: Houghton week, mi Ivanhoe, also disappointed bis numerous followers. Planets victory, needless to say, whs highly popular, and was the third registered in the same colors iu this race during recent years."
