SUN BRIAR BADLY BEATEN • Star of Last Year Runs a Dismal Race Against Common Horses. ♦ Lexington Track Still Heavy — Simpson Wins on Miss Procter and Brownie McDawell. Lexington. Ky.. April l.",.— Willis Sharp? Kilmers Sun Briar, present Kentucky Derby favorite, furnished the outstanding upset of tills afternoons racing by his failure to defeat what was supposi-d to tie an ordinary band, which he met at three-quarters, in what was termed the feature of the card, the winner turned up in Jim Heffering. ridden by Gangel. Choir Master taking second place and following the pair far back and desperately ridden, came Sun Briar. Regarded as a superior mud runner, several of his most notable triumphs last year being accomplished in that sort of going. Sun Briar was regarded as unbeatable in the going of today, but those who followed his action closcly in todays nice appeared at a loss and tin- only explanation that could he offered is that muddy tracks in these parts and those of the east, particularly at Saratoga, are vastly different. Sun Briar lacked that dash which characterized his racing last year and was tardy in leaving the barrier, which caused him to be badly outrun from the outset. He made a gixwl effort while going up the hill and momentarily threatened to displn-e Choir Master, the leader, lint Jim Heffering. which al-o was in close proximity, came over dangerously close at this stage and Knapp took his mount hark to avoid the possibility of being shut off. From that time on Sun Briar was hopelessly beaten unit continued to droit back despite the oncntctic efforts of Knapp. Jim Heffering drew level with Choir Master in the last eighth and from there on drew out to win with ridiculous ease. Bight Angle was another disappointment of the race, for he was regarded, before the race, as the only one likely to take Sun Briars measure. The excuses for Sun Briars poor showing wc re numerous and varied. There remains a serious doubt as to his ability to cover a mile and a quarter at top speed, which will lie necessary on May 11. when the crack colts line up to MM barrier at inn chill Downs for the supreme test of the Kentucky Derby. The Perkins-Simpson combination was again conspicuous this afternoon and the two-year-old race for Allies again were to a Perkins trained filly, with Simpson in the saddle. The winner on this occasion was Miss Procter, owned by D. W. Scott. She ran like a useful oue and led her opponents from the raise of the barrier. Simpsons other winning mount was ou Brownie McDawell, trained by Perkins. SUBSTITUTE RACE NECESSARY. Racing pahrons today were treated to some excellent s]Mrt despite unfavorable track conditions. The steady rain of last night again caused a difficult track* and. as a result of the bad going. A. K. Macoinhers Hollister was withdrawn from Unoriginal third race, in which only four were carded to start. This caused it to be declared off and a new race at three-quarters for ordinary ones was substituted. Squeeler. which scored yesterday in the opening race, duplicated his performance this afternoon and was the first doulile winner of the meeting. He won from Night Owl, with Harvest King in third place. Audrey K. furnished an upset when she Ix-at Melus after a hard brush. Martre accounted for the sulislitute race in l oat-ing Vanessa Welles and Executor. The closing dash went to Clare from Pulaski, with Fair Orient heading the others. Willis Sharpe Kilmer, owner of Sun Briar, arrived last night and witnessed the disapiMiinting performance of his colt. He will remain here until the running of the Kentucky Derby. Bight Angles poor showing might have been due to a hemorrhage. The colt was bleeding at the nostrils on his return to the judges stand. Owners T. P. Hayes and B. J. Brannou Ml fined a nominal sum for their failure to announce riders on Sasenta and Mar Tom at the proper time, which the Kentucky Racing Commission rule requires. Secretary C. Nuckols. of the Kentucky Itacing Commission, stated today that the meeting caller! for Saturday had been iiostpoued until next Wednesday. Th» two-horse combination, consisting of Audrey K. and Martre. yielded its backers 09.70. Miss Procter. Brownie McDawell and Clare, in the three-horse combination, paid 5.3v . Trainer McDaniel stated that Sun Briar has grown nearly three inches since last fall and that he is a full fifteen hands and three inches in height at present. *
