a FURTHER RECOGNITION FOR THE HORSE Government Has Authorized the Creation of Fifteen Additional Cavalry Regiments. Without doubt the most favorable commentary which his come to light for eoaee time regarding the necessity of allowing no obstacles to interfere with heUSiaS u! the remnant of the horse breeding industry in this country, was furnished n-eentiy when tl.e government authorized the creation of fifteen ad-itional cavalry regiments. This authorization, coupled with the tremendous difficulty .-x|M-rienced in the United States by agents of England and France, se-arehing for suitable remounts for cavalry punioscs. will prove a serious setb.-ick to those who have argued that cavalry was obsdete and the real reason for racing therefore removed. K--cords show that it was a detachment of British cavalry which closed an ominous gap in the allied lines during the recent heavy fighting near Amiens, while gallant French horsemen played an invaluable late in the heroic defense of the French sector during the last big offensive. It is sad. indeed, that the criticism of misguided ide..i-,ts. together with the adverse legislation of recent years, should have been allowed to reduce the lu-eed.ing industry to its present deplorably law ebb. Only the other day, a prominent Englishman. who hid iM-en sent to this country to obtain remounts for tin- p.ritish cavalry, stated that it was practically impossible to get enough horses of the kind mated to make a search for them worth while. Natursllv. this condition is now viewed with alarm. Unlike ships, battle planes and the other weaaeaa at warfare, horses cannot be standardised and built. "In n a national emergene;.- arises. A thoroughbred is essentially the product of long painstaking effort, ext-nding over a period of years and involving racing as a test of stamina — a fact which was probably least understood by those responsible for present conditions.
