* __ NATURALIST A GREAT MUD RUNNER New York. June 4. — The question has never yet he-en uuauinii -usly settled why some horses run so much better over a sloppy or lieavy course than over a fast track, yet such is the ease. Some horses are pronounced mud runners and others cannot move on any other but a fast track. There was a de-cide-d instance of this in the Toboggan Handicap won by Naturalist. This son of Rabelais — Nature showed phenomenal sjK-ed and left space between himself and his opponents from the first stride to the last, making liorses like Motor Cop. Old KfK-nig and Roamer, also good mud iM-rformers, appear outclassed. Many experts believe the action of a horse is accountable, others that tender fe-et give them more confidence. Whatever it is. there is something that fits the physical make-up of certain horses which plainly demonstrates their superiority in certain kinds of going. Naturalist has proved himself an exceptional mud runner more than one-e. and Elfin ijucon. winner of the Juvenile and Fashion Stakes, acted in the former as if she had inherited or developed the mud running quality. Both can be- indexed among the horses with exe-eptional mud running proclivities. Another might also Ik- added in Hannibal, the sou of Olambala — Mexoana. He, too, should not bo overlooked in sloppy going. *
