THREEYEAR OLD SUPREMACY Question As to Which Is Best of the Year Remains Unanswered Saratoga Racing May Decide Decidethe the Real Champion of ofThat That Division New York July 23 With about half of the 191S racing season over the question as to which is the Ixst tlirceyearold of the year remains unanswered 1nihalilv Saratoga will furnish the answer Still again it may not be definitely decided until late in the fall at Iimlico or Laurel However the rich threeyearold stakes at Saratoga will afford in opportunity to decide the championship of the division and it is not at all unlikely that before the end of August we may be hailing Johren War Cloud Jack Hare Jr The Porter Papp Tippity Witchft or some candidate less considered at this time as the champion One thing is certain there will 1 e some wonderful racing at the Spa next month and none will be hardly any more interesting than the battle royal among the threeyearolds threeyearoldsWhile While some are proclaiming War Cloud the best of the threeyearolds since his impressive victory in the Dwyer Stakes it seems quite absurd to place the crown on the Macombcr colt on the result of that one nice Especially is this so when attention is called to the fact that every condition weather track and racing luck was favorable to War Cloud True enough in that race he administered a de ¬ cisive defeat to the Whitney colt Johreu and to that speed marvel Jack Hare Jr It is also true that Colonel Applegatcs good colt gave him a strong argument right down the long stretch but these two made Johreu look cheap and faint ¬ hearted from the time they were two hundred yards on their journey and the farther they went the worse it looked for the sou of Spearmint Mineola MineolaJOHREN JOHREN NOT AT HIS BEST BESTOf Of course it is possible Johreii may not have been at his best that day although nobody happened to think of that before the lace They felt that they lad the combined skill and wisdom of Albert Simons and James IJowe behind their good opinion of Johren and that the colt would be fit to give his best in the race but even at that he did not run even creditably much less up to his previous performances It may be that the long trip to and back from Latonia where he won the Latonia Derby may have affected him as it did Cudgel after his trip to Kentucky earlier in the year yearAt At any rate it is hardly fair or good judgment to cast aside Johreu after his brilliant victories in the Belmont Stakes Latonia Derby and other races With a good long rest Johren should be in tiptop condition for Saratoga and at his best the Whitney colt will return his lost laurels is the opinion of many good judges judgesIn In considering the prominent contenders for the threeyearold crown Jack Hare Jr is not to be overlooked The Applegate colt is possessed of a wonderful turn of speed and unflinching gsmcness It is doubtful if anybody ever saw Jack Hare Jr outgamcd in a finish Some critics said that War Cloud oiitgained him in the finish for the Dvyer Stakes at Aqueduct but nothing could be further from the truth The splendid son of Polymelus Dreamy oustayed him and won with something to spare because he was the freshest horse at the finish but 110 horse ever finished with more real bulldog courage and gameuess than did Jack Hare Jr in that same race He was giving up every ounce that was in him and he never flinched for even the smallest fraction of a second until the race had been won and lost Jack Hare Jr has been laced more than any of the other topnotch threu yearolds but seems to thrive oa racing and has won the majority of the races in which he has been engaged engagedTHE THE PORTER HIGHCLASS COLT COLTAnother Another threeyearold to come in for careful consideration is E It McLeans highly prized Sweep colt The Porter which carried everything l lef ef re him in Kentucky Astute turfmen who have seen The Porter race this year pronounce him an ideal tyi e of the thoroughbred race horse and pre ¬ dict for him a brilliant career His owner and trainer arc confident that before the conclusion of the Saratoga meeting The Porter will be hailed as the best of liis age The colt is now at Sara ¬ toga in charge of trainer John Schorr who has had more than a fair measure of success with the McLean horses since taking charge of the Washing ¬ ton turfmans stable stablePapp Papp the Futurity winner of last year is show ¬ ing signs of rounding into form after meeting a I mining mishap earlier in the season This colt is IK of the largest horses in training and when right will be a hard one to beat beatJohn John Sanford is evidently reserving the brilliant Tippity Witchet for Saratoga and if this marvel ¬ ous twoyearold of last year shows up as well as a threeyearold as he did as a juvenile the Amster Coutiuucd oa second page THREEYEAROLD SUPREMACY dam turfman will be well repaid for the odd 20000 he paid for the little fellow fellowIt It may be well not to entirely overlook W S Kilmers Sun Briar the champion twoyearold of last year especially as far as racing at Saratoga is concerned It was at the Spa that Sun Briar made his reputation last year and it may be then that he will regain his lost prestige Trainer Henry McDaniel has given Sun Briar a long rest since his disappointing showing earlier in the year and it may In that that astute trainer will have another surprise at Saratoga SaratogaA A 1C MacomlHT has a fast stout and game colt in the bay Motor Cop by Uncli Xarco which is entitled to respectful consideration He has started three times winning the Stuyvesant Handicap Withers Stakes and ran second in the Toboggan Handicap This colt is not as sound as might be wished but is a colt of grand conformation and extremely rich in breeding having two crosses of Maggie B B two of Leamington one of Bonnie Scotland and one of Lord Clifden in the fourth generation generationJoseph Joseph E Wideners big chestnut colt Trompe La Mort which raced impressively early in the year and won the Metropolitan Handicap may l e a colt which will lake some beating before the close of the Saratoga season but of late he has been partially on the shelf and it may be well toward the end of the Saratoga meeting before he will IN seen at his iMMt He Is a big massive looking chestnut of ad ¬ mirable conformation and possessed of a high turn of speed He is one of the colts bought as yearlings by Mr Widener from the famous French turfman Edmond Blanc He is by Verwood and his dam is that wonderful race mare Marsa by Adam
