FORMER RIDER ENTHUSIAST SOLDIER George Swain Says He Wouldnt Have Missed Wear ¬ ing Uniform for Anything in the World New York July 23 Most everyone who has at ¬ tended a race meeting during the past ten or twelve years will remember George Swain once a good jockey then an owner and trainer now a soldier and it might bo added one whose patriotism can never be questioned questionedIf If ever a man joined the army and was delighted with his change of surroundings it is George Swain I would not have missed wearing this uniform and the shoos and leggings for anything jn the whole world said Swain and if every eligible to the ranks does not get out and buckle on a pack then lie does not know what he is missing missingI I never knew what health was until I went into camp At first I used to get legweary and tired after a hike but now I can pick up my pack and hike along for miles without getting exhausted When I get back to camp I can eat the bone of n juicy steak with relish Dont think we are short on good things to eat either We get excellent food the best that can be bonsht and plenty of it We have no worries in camp life We work hard eat well and sleep well and have plenty of amuse ¬ ment In fact a camp is just a happy family party partyI I have met many boys who used to follow racing for a livelihood and some of them are hardly recog ¬ nizable physically From slonchy dontcare sort of chaps they are now straight up and down with military bearing and look like real men What is more everybody seems happy and all are anxioiu to get aboard for over there It is a great life lifeEXPECTS EXPECTS TO GO OVER SOON SOONI I am in Jlie 338th Infantry Supply Company which means we are the warehouse for the whole outfit Sometimes I drive a team The next job is throwing barrels and boxes around that I would have hired a porter to lift in days gone by Now doing such things is an amusement and a pleasure I expect we shall be going across soon as we have been brought on from Camp Cnster and landed at Camp Mills We all know that means an early shipment shipmentIt It cannot come soon enough for me I am ready for the work whatever it may be and if I only get one German before somebody gets me Ill know I have put in the best 1 know for the good old United States StatesThe The sincere and determined way in which Swain spoke is in line with the reports from the front that the American soldier is nnequaled In his early years George Swain as he is known on the race course but whose real registered name is Wagner Axel Swoon was an acrobat and traveled with his brother who is also in the army and at the front From that profession he turned to the horses and showed considerable ability as a rider even when he tipped the scales at ninety pounds Excess avoirdu ¬ pois soon put him out of business and he bought a horse or two
