RUMOR MONGERING MONGERINGThe The Uboat sneaking under the sea that she may destroy helpless women and cliildi plement of war but of cowardly assassination ami as such is justly abhorred by all descent peoples There are said to be even a few Germans who are ashamed to take part in the jubilations with which their nation celebrates every wholesale murder of the innocents innocentsIn In the various clandestine rumors that now and then appear above the current of our national life we have the equivalent of these criminals of the sea distinguished from the other iu that they at ¬ tack the reputations instead of the lives of the inno ¬ cent and scuttle fair names instead of ships Like the Uboats their favorite victims are women and like death they love a shining mark If they have been successful in many of their assaults on Red Cross workers on the unselfish women who are serving in the canteens and hospitals and even on Sisters of Charity and soldiers of the Salvation Army it is due to our credulity and love of evil speaking Rumor has only to show its sinister periscope above the war tossed waves of popular discussion to be taken up by a thousand eager tongues and spread broadcast through the land No need for our countrys enemies to aid in this cowardly work We have a sufficient number of thoughtless and malevolent persons to make effec ¬ tive this cruel and filthy undermining of that which should be held sacred by every one not a German GermanThose Those who have ears to hear cannot avoid catch ¬ ing these foul rumors as they fly but who can tell whence they come It is for the secret service aided by all good citizens to locate the rumor base and destroy it New York Herald
