FLAGS MAY PROVE ANOTHER ROSEBEN George Odom Declares Son of Whisk Broom II Is the Fastest Horse He Ever Trained New York July 23 I never trained a faster horse than Flags said George Odom after the son of Whisk Broom II Inaugural had won the Maho pac Handicap at Empire City I have had some fast onPs too including that old mare Folly Levy which ran like a streak when she felt liko it but tli is gelding Flags is certainly a runner He has shown mo a quarter in twentytwo seconds in his work under favorable conditions but not until the Mahopac did he convince me he is the fastest horse for a short distance in the country countryWhether Whether he will be anything but a sprinter is doubtful but in threequarters races lie has every qualification Not only is he fast but he handles his scale weight just as readily as ho does a light Impost That he is game was also demonstrated He and Star Spangled had had a battle for nearly fiveeighths but when Lyko hit him with the whip alHitit a hundred yards from the finish he galloped right away from Star Spangled Of course it may have been that Star Spangled was tiring a bit but Flags seemed to jump away when he felt the cut of the whip whipThis This shows Flags had something left In him at the close or he would not have responded so quickly It is possible he will turn out to be another Rose ben His only fault is at the start He seems to dwell for a fraction of a second when the barrier is raised and thereby loses ground But he is so fast he soon makes it up Yet this habit may cause him to lose races as he may not get clear sailing at all times timesAccording According to the official timer the fraction of an eighth which constitutes the about on the Em ¬ pire course was run in nine and threefifths sec ¬ onds and the next eighth which is up grade was covered in 22 seconds The entire distance was run in 1OS the last fiveeighths being covered in 58Jf which while it will not be recorded as a rec ¬ ord is the fastest fiveeighths ever run over the Empire City track The record is one minute flat made by James Butlers Gnat in 1914 and equaled again in 1017 by J Livingstons American the lat ¬ ter carrying 115 pounds qml Gnat 102 Flags car ¬ ried 125 pounds in his race
