JOCKEY GRIFFIN AN EASTERN VISITOR VISITORDeclares Declares Lack of Unity of Action Prevents Resump ¬ tion of Racing on Pacific Coast New York July 23 II T Griffin better known in turf circles as Tommy Griffin is spending a brief vacation in the east Mr Griffin together with his family came from California to visit a son who is a member of the marines stationed at Ports ¬ mouth N H Speaking of the outlook for a re ¬ vival of racing in California Mr Griffin said saidThere There isnt sufficient unity of action for an im ¬ mediate resumption of racing on the Pacific coast But it will come sooner or later At present there are many influential men who are willing to lend a hand but lack of organization has prevented any definite move If everyone would turn his ideas into one channel and all pull together it is almost certain legislation could be secured that would again place California on the man as one of the foremost thoroughbred centers of the country countryNot Not many of the present generation remember Tommy Griffin as a rider He was a jockey in the late eighties and early nineties and while never shining as one of the brightest stars in the saddle he rode many winners As a horseman and trainer Griffin is one of the few who have made a fortune Fev owners were shrewder than Griffin who in the later years of his turf career was known as Halter Tommy owing to his habit of buying and claiming horses out of selling races One of his most success ¬ ful methods was the buying of a numlKr of yearlings and educating them for spring racing Out of each band he would probably get one or two good ones The others he would sell as soon as he could find customers
