NEW RECRUITS TO BREEDING INDUSTRY May Be Outcome of Disposal of John E Maddens Hamburg Place Mares New York August 2 Seldom has there been i turf announcement more important in recent years than the recent declaration of John E Madden that lie Avas about to retire as a public breeder of thor ¬ oughbred horses Mr Madden for a considerable time has enjoyed the reputation of being one of the most extensive breeders in this country and it would be little short of a calamity if it meant that Mr Madden was to retire from the turf alto ¬ gether But the reason for the retirement as a public breeder is in order that Mr Madden may have more time to devote to the racing itself leav ¬ ing the breeding to others The beginning of the dispersal of the Madden stock came recently when Friar Rock and a group of twentysix mares were sold to John II Bosseter the California turfman and breeder The famous stallions Star Shoot Og den Plaudit and Hessian are to be sold privately Mr Madden still owns oner 100 broodmares and these arc now for sale privately though he prefers to dis ¬ pose of the greater part of them on a new plan which seems calculated to add valuable recruits to the thoroughbred breeding industry industryNOVEL NOVEL SALE METHOD TO BE USED USEDUnder Under this plan Mr Madden proposes to sell mares to any lover and admirer of the thoroughbred who will take these mares on the understanding that the first two foals of each marc are to be sold at public auction as yearlings Mr Madden receiving as pay ¬ ment for each mare onehalf the amount realized by the sales of these two foals It is to be es ¬ pecially stipulated however that the mares are to be permanently located in cither Kentucky or Vir ¬ ginia No more than three mares will be sold to one person on these terms termsThe The mares are young matrons who have been se ¬ lected with great care and are strong in the blood of Glencoe Matchem Eclipse Gallopade Maggie B B etc which have made the American brood ¬ mare worldfamous or lse are exclusively repre ¬ sentative of the most fashionable strains in the English Stud Book No mares will be sold on these terms to public breeders it being Mr Maddons hope and purpose to obtain for the thoroughbred industry new devotees who may be attracted by tliis opportunity to purchase desirable young brood ¬ mares upon unusually favorable terms involving no outlay except the proper care of the mare and her first two foals until the latter have been publicly sold the purchaser then retaining the mare and onehalf the amount brought by these foals
