MADDEN SALE WILL BE HELD IN FALL FALLDate Date for Dispersal Not Definitely Set but Is Likely to Follow Saratoga Meeting Lexington Ky August 2 The date of the dis ¬ persal sale of John K Maddens great string of thoroughbreds ending his career as a brooder of race horses lias not yet boon announced but it U understood here that it will take place on the farm immediately at the close of the Saratoga meeting or just before the holding of the fall meeting of the Kentucky Association for which dates have not yet been announced announcedIt It is probable that it will surpass the Wickliffe Stud sales here last January at which 225000 worth of thoroughbred horses were sold in one afternoon Mr Madden it is said will devote the breeding establishment which covers some 2500 acres to the pursuits of agriculture and cultivated fields will succeed the present blue grass pastures pasturesApproximately Approximately 1000000 worth of thoroughbred arid trotting horses have been bred and sold from tills farm during its operation by Mr Madden cov ¬ ering a quarter of a century centuryHamburg Hamburg Is probably the greatest of all the horses owned by Mr Madden Hamburg in his twoyear old year won the Great Kastern Great Trial tht Double Event Congress Hall the Flash the Rising Generation and in fact nearly every important race for colts of his age with the exception of the Fu ¬ turity for which he was not eligible He was sold by Mr Madden in the winter following hjs most suc ¬ cessful twoyearold season to Marcus Daly for S40000 As a threeyearold he captured the Reali ¬ zation the richest stake for threeyearolds in America as well as the Brighton Cup CupMr Mr Madden in breeding Sir Martin had the dis ¬ tinction of having produced the only Americanbred horse to go to the post in the English Derby a pro ¬ nounced favorite He won the Trial Stakes and something over 70000 before he was sold to an American living in England one Louis Winans In the colors of Winans he won the Coronation Cup and is now in the stud of his owner near Brighton England In the list of stallions at various times owned at Hamburg Place have been Mirthful a highclass race liorse and the sire of many winners Ogden a Futurity Klnner and a great success in the stud Plaudit winner of the Kentucky Derby Star Shoot the leading American moneywinning stallion for four years two in succession and Ormondale a Futurity winner winnerOGDEN OGDEN SECOND IN THE LIST LISTOgdon Ogdon for two years hhs been second in the list of winning sires and is by Kllwarlin Oriole by Bend Or Plaudit is by Himyar and from the fa ¬ mous broodmare Cinderella Ormondale is a grand ¬ son of Ormonde the horse of the century on the English turf turfAdded Added to this list must be named Uncle which horse raced in the colors of Mr Madden who was the first to patronize the son of Star Shoot after hii retirement to the stud Fourteen mares from Ham ¬ burg Place were sent to Uncle and among their produce one finds the names of Old Rosebud and Little Nephew stake winners the former a Ken ¬ tucky Derby winner and easily the best horse of his day dayBallot Ballot by Voter Cerito by Lowland Chief sire of nineteen twoyearold winners in 1910 now the property of Charles H Bcrryman and In the stud at Sakonnet Farm on the Paris and Lexington pike was bought by Mr Madden from the late James R Keene while the horse was at Newmarket England for a price of 20000 and as the stallion was after ¬ ward sold to the late J B Haggin for something like 50000 it is probable he would have topped the sile at the dispersal of the estate had he been re ¬ tained and offered with theothers sold at that time timeFriar Friar Rock recently sold to J II Rosseter was a stake winner at two and three racing in the colors of Maj August Belmont chairman of the Jockey Club In his first year he won the Whirl Stakes and Adirondack Handicap in his threeyear old form he won the Suburban and Brooklyn Handi ¬ caps ami the Bclmont Stakes proving himself to be a genuine stayer as well as one of the fastest thor ¬ oughbreds on the American turf He also won the Saratoga Cup at one and threequarters miles in 303 beating among others The Finn and Roamer an easy victory over several of the best horses in training trainingFriar Friar Rock is by Rock Sand he by Sainfoin Ro quebruue by St Simon and his dam is Fairy Gold by Bend Or Dame Masham by Galliard from Pau ¬ lina by Hermit Rock Sand the sire of Friar Rock was a winner of the Triple Crown the Two Thou ¬ sand Guineas Derby and St Leger the three most important events for threeyearolds on the Eng ¬ lish turf and in the stud has been represented in England by Tracery winner of the St James Palace and Sussex Stakes and St Leger at three the Burwell Plate Eclipse and Champion Stakes at four and one
