LABOR DAY AT CHURCH ILL DOWNS Historic Louisville Track Turned Over to Soldiers for Athletic Tournament Next Monday Louisville Ky August 29 The historic Church ¬ ill Downs race track will lie the scene of the great military athletic tournament which will be con ¬ ducted in Louisville next Monday Labor day This fact was made known last night when Hamilton C Applegate secretary and treasurer of the New Louisville Jockey Club announced that the plant had been turned over to the soldiers for use on Labor day dayIf If the present plans of those in charge of the athletic tournament are carried out Louisville will witness one of the greatest events ever pulled off in the history of athletics in this city Over 1500 of the khakiclad boys at Camp Zaehary Taylor are scheduled to participate in the big event Some of the best athletes in the country are stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor and several records may be shattered on Labor day The dayThe soldier boys are going through regular prac ¬ tice each day to fit themselves for the coming tournament One event on the program which is sure to create considerable interest is a horse Rice A picked thoroughbred and rider will represent each regiment in the race The boys at the remount station are expected to cut quite a figure in this event In addition lo this race a regimental mule race will lie pulled off offMany Many entries have been received for the relay races to say nothing of the obstacle and equip ment races In the latter event the soldiers will carry their full equipment over a long course Many are expected to take part in the wail scaling No less than fifty entries have been received for the various jumps Several of the boys at the camp are novices when it comes to tlie high jump All jumpAll Louisville is exacted to turn out at the athletic tournament as the entire proceeds of the event will be used for supplying athletic equipment for the hoys at Camp Zachary Taylor
