at Saratoga August 21 the peerless gelding eclipsed the long standing feat of the mighty Salvator a champion of other days whose achievements on the turf have been immortalized in song ai l story storySalvator Salvator a chestnut with a blaze face was bred b Daniel Swigert who was the owner of the original Elmendorf Farm back in the eighties and before that time for a number of years Salvators sire was Prince Charlie one of the speediest horses of his clay in England where he was unbeaten as a twoyearold won five of his eight starts as a threeyearold was unbeaten at four winning ten straight races and won eight out of his nine starts as a fiveyearold He was popularly known as the prince of the T Y C meaning the difficult twoyearold course but because of an affection of the wind he was not in favor with the English people for breeding purposes and brought to this country at the age of 13 dying after three seasons in the stud siring besides Salvator Pirate of Pen zance and fourth once his total net winnings amount ¬ ing to the magnificent stini of 113710 113710The The only time lie was ever out of the money was in his first start which was as a twpyearold in the Junior Champion Stakes at Monmouth Park on August 11 1888 when he was ridden by Andy Hamilton and finished fourth to Proctor Knott Faverdale and Fresno His next start was in the Futurity at Coney Island September 3 when Proctor Knott beat him by a half length after a gruelling finish Pike Barnes was on Proctor Knott and Hamilton rode Salvator SalvatorHe He made four more starts as a twoyearold and won each of them the Flatbush Stakes September 8 Barnes up the Maple Stakes at Brooklyn Septemlier 27 the Tuckahoe at Jerome Park October 1 and the Titan Stakes at Jerome Park October 10 Garrison riding him in tlie last named three But hu did not meet Proctor Kuott in any of the four AS A THEEEYEABOLD THEEEYEABOLDAs As a threeyearold in 1889 Salvator made eight starts and won seven of them His only defeat that year was when Ixmgstrect and Proctor Knott beat him for the Omnibus Stakes at one mile and a half at Monmouth Park August 13 Loiigstreot was ridden by Garrison and won easily by two lengths Isaac Murphy was on Proctor Knott and Jimmy Mcliughliii on Salvator Proctor Knott get ¬ ting the place by u neck The time was 230 The first of his threeyearold victories was in the Tidal Stakes at Coney Island June IS His next was iu the Kealization Stakes at tlie same track July 2 when he beat Tenny a nose after one of the most desperate races that has ever been seen for that coveted prize He next won the Lorillard Stakes at Monmouth Park July 9 Then came the defeat in tlie Omnibus Sttkes At Coney Island Aug ¬ ust 17 he won tlie Jersey Handicap and at the October 3 at Jerome Park he won a sweepstakes and closed the season by picking up a purse race at Jerome Park October 11 In all of these races save two he was ridden by Jimmy McLatighlin Isaac Murphy had the mount in the Lorillard Stakes and Billy Donohue piloted him in the purse race on October 11 Salvator made five starts as a fouryearold and was unbeaten It was in this year 1890 that his greatest achievements were realized He began by winning the Suburban Handicap at Coney Island June 17 in which he was ridden by Isaac Murphy and in which he defeated Cassius by a neck Tenny Strideaway Kaceland Firenze Prince Koyal Montague and Longstreet Firenze was his stable mate and was coupled with Salvator in the betting David T Pulsifer the owner of Tenny was not satisfied that the Suburban was a true determina tion of the merits of the two fouryearolds and he arranged with Mr Haggin for a match at 5000 a side each to carry 122 pounds and to run one mile and a quarter on June 23 at Coney Island Isaac Murphy had the mount on Salvator and Garrison was on Tenny Tlie betting was 3 to 3 Salvator and 13 to 10 Tenny For the first quarter of a mile they laid together with Tenny on the inside Salvator then shot out and at a terrific pace led down the backstretch by a length and a half to two lengths This was increased to three lengths as they neared the homestretch for the final drive where both jockeys displayed the most dextrous and artistic skill Inch by inch Tenny drew iip to Salvator but just failing tOAUlte reach his opponent the verdict was in favor of the son of Prince Charlie by a nose It was this race that inspired the poets of the day and the praises of Salvator were sung in all of the principal theaters of the land and on every heath where a racer had WHEN HE BEAT TENNY On July 12 Salvator had a walkover for the Mon ¬ mouth Cup and a luontli later to the day he took the measure of Tenny for the Champion Stakes by four lengths running the mile and a half in 233 233His His last appearance on the turf was at Moumouth Park August 28 when ridden by Bergen at 110 pounds lie raced for a purse of 82300 against Ka veloes record of 139 Vi for a straight mile Sal ¬ vator did it in 135 the first quarter in 23 the half in 47 and the threequarters in 111 That record stood for twentyeight years when IJoamer lowered it over the newly constructed track at Saratoga SaratogaSalvator Salvator was sent to Mr Haggins Kancho del Paso establishment in California in the winter of 1800 and entered the stud there in the spring of 1891 Tlie first of his get made their appearance upon the turf as twoyearolds in 1894 but he was not tlie success as a sire that Mr Haggin had hoped he would be He mated him with many of his choicest mares but no such racers as he had been resulted The best of his get were Sallie Cliquot George Kcssler Salvable Silver H M ss Kucker Our Gertie Salabar San Mateo and Savable winner of the Futurity in 1902 1902After After the dispersal of the Kancho del Paso Mr Haggin brought Salvator to Elmendorf Farm in Kentucky where he spent the remainder of his days daysThere There was never a visitor to the noted Haggin establishment that did not ask to see Salvator the request usually coming first of all inquiries concern ¬ ing the establishment He was for years a subject for camera fiends and more snapshots have been taken of him than probably any other horse in the world worldHe He was a general favorite witli everybody con ¬ nected with the farm and was obedient as a well trained dog to Manager Swan of the stallion depart ¬ ment mentSalvator Salvator died at the Elmendorf Farm in 1909 and was buried there A monument marks his grave with but a single inscription Salvator
