SANFORD RETIREMENT A BIG SURPRISE By C J Fitz Gerald GeraldNew New York September 3 The announcement that John Sanford had decided to sell the thoroughbreds in training as well as the yearlings at his Hurri cana Stud at Amsterdam came as a surprise The brooding establishment which was founded by his father the late General Stephen Sanford will be maintained and the friends of Mr Sanford were unanimous in tlie opinion that he would return to active participation in racing as soon as the war is over Tlie yearlings will be sold on Friday evening September 13 while the horses in training will be disposed of in the paddock at Belmont Park on Futurity day Mr Sauford has been a generous purchaser of blooded stock both at home and abroad for a number of years and he has some of the best racing strains in the world in the animals which will be offered to the public publicThe The victory of Sunny Slope over Motor Cop makes the Kentuckyowned colt a formidable candidate for the autumn races here and in Maryland Martin paid 250 for Sunny Slope as a yearling
