HAVANA SPORT THRILLING Close Finishes Feature .Majority of Races at Oriental Park. Half the Card at Distances Over a Mile Three Straight for Sister Susie. i HAVANA. Cuba, January 30. Horses suited by longer distances than the usual sprinting ones were given a chance to show their merit at Oriental Park this afternoon, tho conditions of the last three , races calling for journeys of a mile or over. Well matched fields went to the post in all of these races and interesting contests resulted. In the fourth Crystal Day, under a particularly strong finish by jockey Dreyer, just managed to get up in the final strides to beat Sam Hill by a nose. The latter was the pacemaker and enjoyed a safe lead to the stretch, where Crystal Day wore him down and passed hint in the final stride. The fifth race was at a mile and fifty yards, and another hot finish resulted, with Point to Point just managing to outlast Chillum by a head. The "winner met with some interference and was finally taken to the outside, where lie went;around his opponents, tiring from his effort at the end. Chillums performance was sensational, as he closed a big gap and just failed to get up. Another close finish came in the last race, a dash of a mile and a sixteenth, Sasenta, from the stable of Kay Spence, accounting for it bi-a neck after a warmly contested stretch struggle witli Kingfisher and John W. Klein. Todays sport was held under perfect weather and track conditions. The tourist colony is increasing daily, and but few who visit Huvana fail to find their way to beautiful Oriental Park. The attendance this afternoon was, the largest cf the week, and -enthusiasm ran high over the many close and. spirited finishes that marked a majority of todays races. In the opening race the spectators were given an idea of what was in store for them when thev saw Terrible Miss get up in the final strides of a terrific finish, the result of which was in doubt until the official placing was announced. Bagda-dine looked all over the winner after disposing of D. C. Girl and assuming the lead in the stretch. The effort told on her and she failed to resist the powerful closing challenge of Terrible Miss. The favorite in the race. Fortunes Favor, was a bitter disappointment to Jier backers, never figuring prominently at any stage. Only a nose separated Brown Prince and Closer at the end of the second race. It was anybodys race entering the stretch, where Servia, the pacemaker, was the first to retire, leaving Brown Prince. Closer and Peep Again to fight out the last eighth, with the result mentioned above, Peep Again getting third money. Sister Susie, one of the most consistent sprinters among the selling platers here, scored her third successive victory iu as many starts at this meeting when she cantered home in front of a fair band in the third race. Sweet Alyssum, a half-sister to the winner, was second. Gus Sclieer. reeentlr acquired in a claiming race by F. D. Weir, was third. A
