TIME RECORDS AND TRACKS Australian Speed and Courses Considered by Expert Two Experts Discuss the Differ ¬ ences in Figures and Their Causes As is generally known Randwick holds more time t records than any other Australian course writes Pilot in the Sydney Referee Those made on it are for threequarters of a mile Balarau Rosedell Poitriua and Fight Ever 111 each one mile Satin Bird 137 mile and an eighth Gloaming 152 one mile and an eighth and 100 yards Publican 158 one mile and a quarter Cetigne 204y one mile and a half Wedding Day 230 one mile and fiveeighths Chante inerle 245 one and threequarter miles Scout ¬ master 300 two miles Prince Bardolph 324 and three miles Trafalgar 522 i It also shares the four and a half furlongs record of 54 Vi with Kemhln Grange but without reflecting on the last mentioned track few Sydney racing men have ever seriously accepted the time credited Linaceae there as she was a moderate animal and only squeezed home by the narrowest margin from an ¬ other youngster of little account then or after Woorak made the Randwick record The Australian record of 100 for fiveeighths of a mile is shared by Brolly and Palm Leaf at Randwick with First Shot and Probation which respectively made their time at Cheltenham and Victoria Park Adelaide Ift New Zealand better times have been made than in Australia at several distaneesSurveyor having run half a mile in 45 MacliineTTun five eighths in 5S and Kilboyne threequarters in 110 at Riccarton Christchurchl but in each of those instances according to what I have seen stated in New Zealand papers the horses had a strong wind behind them At Ellerslie Auckland Gloaming won a mile race in l37Mt and Warsteps two miles in 324 at Trentham Wellington still stands as a record for New Zealand and beats Prince Bardolphs Australian best by threequarters of a second secondNEW NEW ZEALAND TRACKS AND RECORDS RECORDSIn In view of some of the New Zealand records the following reference by the New Zealand Sporting and Dramatic Review to the various tracks is of interest interestNew New Zealand race tracks are not of the uniform order Trentliam of its size being well graded has the best fine weather tracks for all distances Riccarton a still bigger course has advantages over most when big fields are engaged The straightaway courses there from a half mile to threequarters of a mile are at any time just a shade faster than the half mile to threequarters of a mile distances on the Trentham course which is becoming the better going from year to year in our opinion We can look for fast fiveeighths races at Ellerslie but the turn when all speed should be on will shorten the stride and counteract tin early downhill advantage to most though not an advantage to all horses The mile and if we had seveneighths events for cracks might be run faster than elsewhere in New Zealand ZealandThe The Australasian record for the mile was held by Desert Gold but now stands to the credit of Gloaming A flyer over a mile say at Randwick which is one of the fairest courses in the world for big fields and for making time on would probably make better time at Ellerslie over this particular distance than on any other mile course which has come under our observation When Desert Gold made her record mile there it looked as though she could under pressure have done a little better Though her last eighth was the slowest she had shown a great burst of speed on the down grade and had the rails all the way Gloaming which now holds the record did not have quite the same advantage Though he met something more brilliant than Desert Gold did to insure the pace being good he had to cover a bit more ground in running and the wind was a bit against him He ran a more even pace throughout and finished up with something in reserve reserveAuckland Auckland will probably continue to hold the mile record if no other No other course in New Zealand is kept like the Ellerslie one and we are firm in the opinion that the downhill stages givis advantages that are not outweighed by the slight rises and the final bend which when readied must be at a speed not quite so fast as runners from the new post at fiveeighths attain when they arrive there In the meantime wo must be satisfied with our mile record at Ellerslie mainly because it was a threeyearold Gloaming that accom plishcd the performance
