EDWIOND BLANC RETURNS TO TURF Famous Frenchman to Race and Breed Horses After Retiring in 1915 French advices are to the effect that Edmond Blanc is to return to breeding and racing this year He retired in October 1915 and sold his fortytwo horses for some 42920 and it was feared that he had gone for good Edmond Bhincs Jardy and other studs made him world famous1 as a breeder and he did wonderfully well as an owner in France since the year 1879 up to the outbreak of the war Upon no fewer than seven occasions he won the Grand Prix de Paris viz with NubIenne in 1879 Clamart 1891 Rucil 1892 Andree 1895 Arreau 1890 Quo Vadis 1903 and Ajax 1904 The last named son of Flying Fox which horse he bought for 37500 guineas at the Kingsclere sale oil March 8 1900 was never beaten and was the best racer he ever owned The Prix du Jockey Club or French Derby tlje next richest prize in Fraiiee has three times fallen to racers owned by Mr Blanc viz with Clover in 1889 Saxon in 1901 and Ajax iii 1901 while the Prix de Diane French Oaks he secured by the aid of Nubienne 1879 Profane 1901t rMedeah 1908 Union 1909 and Marsa 1910 He also won innumerable other races of varying values in France butthc orange blue cap was none too lucky in England although he was twiee successful in the Middle Park Plate first when Gouverncur trained by Tom Jennings won in 1890 and secondly with Jardy in 1904 He also secured the Eclipse Stakes with that fine horse Val dOr in 1905 1905Good Good as the racers undoubtedly were that Mr Blanc owned his several efforts to win tlie Ep ¬ som Derby all failed for Gouvcrneiir and Jardy were respectively second to Common and Cicero and Vinicins occupied the name annoying bertli to Rock Sand in 1903 while Reverend was second to Com ¬ mon for the St Ixger of 1891 and Gouvernante made a hot favorite for the thunderstorm Derby of 1904 would not face the rain and finished sev ¬ enth in a field of eight to Mr Leopold de Roth ¬ schilds St Amant The latter won easily but was probably extremely fortunate to have defiyitcd the second Sir John Thursbys John o Gaunt Mr Blanc ran three other horses in the great Epsom race viz Clover whrcli liroke down in Donovans year 1889 Rueil which could only finish ninth out of tlie twelve Sir Hugo beat in 1892 but after ¬ ward won the Grand Prix and Governor II which ran ninth in a field of fourteen when Diamond Jubilee won in 1900 Dcnman was Mr Blancs trainer for a great many years and in 1901 his master had the satisfaction of being tlie most suc ¬ cessful owner ever known during i season in France from the dajs when racing was first brought into prominence there liy Lord Henry Seymour his winnings amounting to tlie vast sum of 32335 in which season Jardy earned 10275 for him by win ¬ ning the Middle Park Plate Later Tardy was sold to South Americans for 150000 Only twice has this record been beaten Mr James R Keene secur ¬ ing 397342 with his racers on the American turf in 1907 while the Duke of Portland captured 359 292 in England during 1889 out of which Donovan won 193338 Ayrshire 103325 and Semolina 15 920 Audax in Horse and Hound
