BE FRANK IN DERBY TRAINING Son of Sir John Johnson to Bo Given Some Prelimi ¬ nary Racing at the Bowio Meeting BALTIMORE Md April C Cornelius M Garrison of New York is authority for the state ¬ ment that his Kentucky Derby candidate Be Frank will get his preliminary work under silks at the Bowie race track Be Frank which wintered at the farm of young AAilliam Jennings at Mount AVash ington in Baltimore County Maryland arrived at Bowie yesterday and while it would not be right to say that he is ready for the colors it is proper to say that he is so nearly ready only a couple of brisk gallops will be required to put a winning edge on Ills condition There is no bigger or better looking threeyearold in Maryland It is a tre mendnous pity this son of Sir John Johnson Frank ¬ ness which carries in ricli profusion the blood of the celebrated Maggie B B the dam of Iroquois and Americas most famous brood mare was not left entire He is the sort of horse the country needs to carrv on the thoroughbred line lineIf If Bo Frank were entire he would come back to Maryland after running in the Kentucky Derby and start in the Preakuess Eternal The AVanderer Cirrus Purchase and Arindex are to start in the Derby at Churchill Downs and then come east for the Preakness as AAar Cloud did last year But as he is not entire Be Frank will remain in the west after the running of the Derby to be prepared for the 15000 Latonia Derby which will be the feature of the summer racing at Latonia After the running of the Latoiiia Derby Be Frank will be shipped to New York But Jennings expects to get a race or so under the belt of Be Frank at Bowie and Havre de Grace and then bring him down to Pimlico for the 5000 PinUico Spring Handicap a race of one mile and a sixteenth for threeyearolds and over that will be run ahead of the Kentucky Derby DerbyGELDING GELDING HELD TO BE A STAYER STAYERShrewd Shrewd judges of thoroughbred form are of the opinion that Be Frank will like the Latonia Derby distance better than he will the Kentucky Derby route The Lutoniii Derby is a Rice of one mile and a half liist ypjir Be Frahk was a slaw horse to get into his stride so slow in fact it seemed time and again as if Tie liatLleen left at the irost He was actually left in Ills Potomac Handicap Laurel Pirks best mile race for twoyearolds which was run in Optober but he won in a canter just the same AArh i he is through with his spring campaign Be Frank will be trained for the Sara ¬ toga Cup a race of one mile and threequarters It is probable that the big Sir John Johnson gelding will go better in the Saratoga Cup than in any race in which he will start ahead of the Bowie Cup Be Frank will surely start in the Bowie Cup if he stands a spring and sninmer campaign and comes through fresh and good lie ought to do that He proved a hardy campaigner last year Maryland racing folk will follow the career of Be Frank with sympathetic interest wherever he may race It was in Maryland last fall at Bowie Pimlico and Havre de Grace that He Frank showed his best form the form that has won for him such high consideration as a Kentucky and Latonia Derby prospect More ¬ over Be Franks trainer William Jennings a son of the oldtime horseman of the same name who raced Dutch Skater Dutch Roller Rolling Bear and Cave Adsum some years back is one of the most popular of Maryland horsemen He is timer at Bowie and paddock judge at Havre de Grace as well as trainer of the Garrison stable stableYoung Young Jennings will have several twoyearolds for the Bowie races one of them being Sub Rosa a daughter of Disguise Kinrose and a near rela ¬ tive in the female line of Pennant Transvaal Iron Mask and Sweep Jennings got these youngsters during the winter and all of them are doing well Sub Rosa looks like the most formidable of the band Jennings believes that she will ciit some ¬ thing of a figure in the twoyearold racing at Havre de Grace and Pimlico even if she docs not show a great deal at Bowie BowieMr Mr Garrison has just signed a contract for two years on jockey II Cassity a youngster who won 18 per cent of his races at Ncy Orleans Cassity will report to Jennings at Bowie track tomorrow and begin riding at once Being well backed lie is certain of plenty of good mounts and a first rate opportunity to show his abilities which are said to be above the ordinary
