BILLY KELLY TO COME WEST He Sir Barton and Milkmaid Pointing for Kentucky Commander Ross and Bedwell BedwellAfter After the Four Blue Grass GrassPrizes Prizes HAVRE DE GRACE Mil Ai ril 21 II G Hod well Hilly Kellys trainer authorizes the announce ¬ ment that Hilly Kelly will go to Kentucky presently to start first in the 20000 Kentucky Derby Hilly Kelly will also go in the Kentucky Ilnndicnii and in the 15000 Latonia Derby at Cincinnati Tlie great gelding will be personally conducted to Kentucky by Hedwell who expects to make two or three trips to the blue grass belt while the Pim ¬ lico Churchill Downs and Latonia meetings arc ill progress sometime after the first of the month monthRedwell Redwell delayed announcing definitely that Hilly Kelly would ship to Kentucky for the Derby until after the gelding had raced and won at Havre de Grace the Harford and Philadelphia Handicaps Oftener than not a great twoyearold gelding fails to make even a passable threeyearold Neverthe ¬ less Hilly Kelly had worked so well for Hedwell at Laurel Park where he wintered that Hedwell was not without hope that lie would do just what lie did These were the tests and the gelding has passed them themWhile While it would be exaggeration to write that Hilly Kelly Itccaiise he has won u five and a half furlongs sprint in muddy going from a horse like Pickwick lias proved that he is the sort of horse to win a Kentucky Derby and especially a Derby that will attract u colt of the undeniable quality of others in the big race his performance was re jissurlngt to his numerous eastern admirers lie slibwftd indeed more dash than he had displayed even in his good races of last year and ran on easily and smoothly smoothlyBILLY BILLY KELLY IS STILL HOMELY HOMELYHilly Hilly Kelly is still a plain not at all wellbal ¬ anced gelding whose only bodily characteristics that attracts attention is a fine quartering He is all of u gelding about the head and shoulders He did not make half as good an impression on Wednesday at Havre de Grace as did Frank D Weirs Hippodrome gelding Toto which started in the fiftli race and won from War Marvel one of Hilly Kellys stablemates Toto is well balanced and splendidly grown He looks more like a stal ¬ lion and propalily it would be well for westerners to keep him in mind He also is going west pres ¬ ently to try Ills luck in the two Derbys at Churchill Downs and Latonia Hut if Hilly Kelly did not make an especially favorable impression on parade he showed well in action Probably he is not ready to go one mile and a quarter yet Maybe lie is not as far advanced as his great rival last year Eternal which lias boon working brilliantly at Hot Springs and Louisville Hut he will be ready for the colors by the time Hedwell gets ready to ship to Kentucky He will get his final prepara nition for the Derby at Havre de Grace and Pim llco iu work and in racing racingETERNAL ETERNAL IDOL OF THE AMATEURS AMATEURSEternal Eternal has many admirers among the patrons of racing in the east He is the favorite of the amateur element in truth Hut Hilly Kelly is easily the choice of the horsemen and if eastern money dominates the ring at Churchill Downs on May 10 Hilly Kelly will be the Derby favorite Thomas Healey trainer of the stable of Richard T Wilson the president of the Saratoga IJacing Association who has fast threeyearolds of his own in the Olambala colts Thunderstorm and Hanni ¬ bal the lastnamed winner last year of the Saratoga Special and Keene Memorial Stakes voiced the opinion of the training fraternity regarding the respective merits of Hilly Kelly and Eternal on Wednesday when he said Hilly Kelly has proven that he will train and I look to see him go on and bent everything so long as he keeps his feet I believe that he is a better horse than Eternal I never considered Eternals success over Hilly Kelly in the McLean Memorial at Laurel as other than a fluke Eternal went into the MelAan Memorial u thoroughly fit horse one that had been carefully nursed and perfectly trained Hilly Kelly took Eternal on in the Memorial as part of a seasons work after one of the hardest campaigns through which a twoyearold was ever sent The fresher horse won the race although it seemed to me that Hilly Kelly would have come off victor if the route had been seve eightlis Instead of threequarters of a mile 1 suppose that Eternal will go as far as horses are asked to go but I believe that Hilly Kelly will go just as far as Eternal will go and faster It is a good thing for some of our eastern Mills that the gelding proposition in the Preakness will prevent Hilly Kellys returning to Haltimore and starting iu Marylands great threeyearold special specialSIR SIR BARTON AND MILKMAID TO COME COMEHedwell Hedwell has not yet decided what horses lie will send with Hilly Kelly A threeyearold is pretty certain to go but which one lie is not certain The folks from over laurel way seem to be of the opinion that Kir Harton will be HedwellK choice of a threeyearold traveling companion for the Dick Welles gelding This fellow is a halfbrother of Sir Martin one of the greatest of American two yearolds in 1908 and one of the choices in the Epsom Derby of a race he lost because of an accident that threw him off his feet about a quarter of a mile from the finish when lie was going fast Sir Harton nearly died of blood poisoning last fall but In is entirely recovered now and no threeyearold in Maryland outlooks him Also he in working brilliantly Hedwell said last fall be ¬ fore Sir Hartons illness that then was nothing Hilly KeUy could do he could not do just as well u ml from all accounts Sir Harton is training just as well this season seasonMilkmaid Milkmaid a fast daughter of Peep oDay with which Commander Ross won several races in Mary ¬ land last autumn will go west with Hilly Kelly but she will not attempt the Derbys She is to bear the Canadians silks in the Kentucky Oaks and other races exclusively for threeyearold fillies
