MRS PAYNE WHITNEYS JUMPERS Debadou the Star of Steeplechasers That Will Carry the Colors of the Greentree Stable This Year BALTIMORE Md April 21 There nre a few flat racers that will bear the silks of Mrs Payne AVhitney on American tracks this year One two yearold Red Red Rose a daughter of AAhisk Broom II Cardamine has already won five races and looks like a miss capable of coming east and holding her own with the best Albert Simons has at Havre de Grace a strapping black colt named Flibbertygibbet by Peter Ian Paintbrush she a daughter of Broomstick Artful He will presently show under the Greentree jacket and there is a sprinter or so among the jumpers at Pimlico James Owens is preparing for the impending spring meeting of the Maryland Jockey Club May 1 to 17 17But But most of Mrs AAhitneys horses are fencers and if we are to judge by the way they are train ¬ ing right now they are going to cut an important figure In the steeplechasing of the current season Cherry Malotte long a mainstay of the stable is not in Owens barn this year If the daughter of Orlando Dottle which is now ten years old trains at all this year she will not come out until later on Syosset II which won a AVhitney Memorial at Piping Rock also has passed along But Owens believes he has a better fencer than either Cherry Malotte or Syosset II at Pimlieo in Debadou and although Debadou is only four years old and four yearold fencers are not supposed to be mature enough to run and jump with the older horses in springtime Owens is pointing Debadou for the coming renewal of the 5000 Green Spring Aalley Steeplechase whicli is over the two mile course and it will attract a better field of fencers perhaps than any other crosscountry event run in the spring springDebadou Debadou a son of Broomstick Leayonara will bo remembered bv the patrons of Maryland stooplH chasing as the threeyearold of last season which with comiiaratively little training won the Elkridge Steeplechase the best crosscountry event for young fencers run last year He showed speed and natural aptitude for jumping and he is a vastly better horse now than he was last November Mrs Whitney lias a commodious private training place at Red Bank N J and Owens was busy with Debadou throughout the mild months of January February and March Debadou has matured and muscled up notably notablyThe The other jumpers of the Greentree Stable of which big things are expected are Slip Shod Tetan Le Requin Coctail and Syosset Le Requin and Slip Shod this one is a halfbrother of Buskin have been away from the races since the year before last They were put by when they bowed tendons for the rest cure and they seem to be perfectly sound ngaiiu Square Dealer one of the brilliant crosscountry developments of last year which ruptured a tendon in a steeplechase at Pimlico that was intended to be his public trial for the Manly Memorial is getting the rest cure at present and there is every prospect that he will come back to the races next year a perfectly sound horse horseWith With these veterans Owens has the Peter Pan sprinter Peter Piper a winner last year and the threeyearolds Lads Love Cock o the North and Hummercloiid the last named a son of Macdonald the sire of Elysian one of the most formidable of Debadous fouryearold fencing rivals of the cur ¬ rent season Peter Piper and Lads Love probably willbe kept at flat racing But it is a pretty sure thing that the Mlcdoniild colt and Cock o the North will be trained for the steeplechase field and that the Elkridge of next November will catch them also the Harbor Hill if there is an autumn meeting at Piping Rock and that popular cross ¬ country event is revived
