FIERCE FIGHT WITH BIG TARPON AV J Kearney a stocfi broker of Boston Mass figured in a senasatipnal episode recently when he landed a large tarpon on the beach at Upcohall near Fort Myers Florida Mr Kearney was fishing in the Caloosalmtchee River with Senator Jonathan 1 Allds of Norwich N Y At the second jump the silver king made after striking the spoon the handle or drag fell off the reel At this time Mr Kearney had out about 125 feet of line In fear nnd trembling lest the prize be lost the line was cut from the rod and attached to another rod and reel the fish evidently napping at this stage of the garni When they attempted to reel in the slack line however it was found that the reel was too small to take in the line consequently the inglers were forced to handle the tarpon with 100 f et of line out that could not be reeled in By working the boat toward the fish and holding the line the best they could after a two hour struggle which seemed like two years the fishermen were iible to wbrk the tarpon into shallow water and bring it to gaff It was a fine KiHcimen weighing 120 pounds and measuring six feet The tarpon was exhausted when captured and so was Mr Kear ¬ ney who stated that if the combat had lasted twenty minutes longer he would not have been able to hold out
