AFTERMATH OF THE DWYER STAKES I NEW YORK N Y July 11 In speaking of the performance of Sir Barton in the Dwyer Stakes Mr Bedwell his trainer said he believed the liorse would have had a better chance of winning had he been held in reserve instead of making the pace as he did in the Beluiont Stakes reserving his speed for the finish Others who believe Purchase would have beaten him in the Dwyer Stakes under any conditions point to the fact that for a half mile and more the Hildreth horse was penned in behind 1 Sir Barton catching much of the mud and slop from the heels of the Ross horse which was not likely to assist Purchase That Purchase was under restraint all along the backstretch was plain to be seen On tliat fact it would seem that the Hildreth horse could have gone to the front at will which he did as soon as called upon Both horses were pretty tired at the finish It is universally conceded that Sir Barton did not run up to general expectations and has lost none of his popularity by his defeat the majority of race followers being of the opinion that the Ross star had not entirely recovered from his training mishap The next meeting of Ibis pair should prove to bo Uio turf event oZ the jrear
