RIVALRY AMONG BREEDERS Owners of Sires Represented in Latonias Big Race Interested Progeny of EightySix Noted Stal ¬ lions Among Championship Stakes Eligibles LOUISVILLE Ky August 15 Eightysix of the most renowned thoroughbred stallions of this coun ¬ try and Europe are represented among the 159 eligible to tlie iO000 Latonia Cliamiiionship Stakes which will be run at tlie coming autumn meeting of tlie Kentucky Jockey Club at tlie La tonhi track Rivalry union tue owners of these Htalllons especially those standing in Kentucky Is almost as keen as among the owners of the horses which will contest for the rich event as the prestige of the sire of tlie winner will be in ¬ creased many fold and his progens Is sure to be much sought in the future futureAt At tlie present writing it looks as though the Kentiickians have a much bettor chance to furnish the sire of the winner than the victorious horse itself as tlie eastern representatives have shown to much better advantage this year to date than the horses from this section and most of them are m keeping up their good work at Saratoga Fitness will count perhaps more than anvthing else in vewrYbrk and vicinity are certain la Si fit as they are getting plenty of racing and most of it at distances over a long mute of ground groundWar War Zone C W Starrs threeyearold son of Dorando Boco is the latest Richmond in the field and his recent victory at Saratoga stamps him as a colt of no mean ability Any horse that can run a mile in 138 or better must be seriously reckoned with and owner Starr was quick to realize this as lie has announced that he will endeavor to get him ready for the rich Latonia stake It Trnvers nominated War Zone for the Latonia Cham ¬ pionship Stakes StakesUNCLE UNCLE HEADS THE ZI8T WITH TEN TENTncle Tncle tlie sire of Old Rosebud and other good horses too numerous to mention is at the top of the list of stallions with representatives in Americas richest stake there being ten of his progeny eligible to start in it Next in line come Celt and Sweep with seven each Star Shoot and Heliotrope with five eacli and Plaudit with four The fire of Heliotropes get were nil nominated and kept eli ¬ gible by the same man W S Heather of Rugby England Included in the list is Wheel of Fortune a daughter of Hattons System and therefore a sis ¬ ter to Huttontrope which has been racing unusually well nt Saratoga this summer summerAnnouncement Announcement of the date for the running of tlie Latonia Championship Stakes will be made with ¬ in a short time General manager SI J Winn of the Kentucky Jockey Club is awaiting the close of tlie nominations for all of tlie stakes at tlie coming three fall meetings before giving out any of their dates These stake entries close on next Wednesday and as soon as they can be compiled their dates will be set setMr Mr Winn is on another expedition to Saratoga and New York in the interest of his organization and he will return soon after the date set for tiie cloning of the stakes He is determined that many of the large eastern stables shall come to Kentucky next fall for a change as in former years they only visited tills section in tlie spring and most of the time then just to run in the Kentucky Derby Ken ¬ tucky Handicap or Latonia Derby This year he ha made the stakes attractive enough to draw them in the autumn and those that come will prob ¬ ably stay a while as there are plenty of rich races fur them to run their best horses in inPLENTY PLENTY WOEK FOR THE HANDICAPPERS HANDICAPPERSThe The board of handlcappers of the Kentucky Jockey Club which is composed of judge Charles F Price William H Shelley and Edward Jasper will find itself with plenty of work on hand next fall IK all of tlie stakes with the exception of the Lntonia Championship and Breeders Futurity will be handicaps and In addition to these there will be numerous overnight affairs of the same class Han ¬ dicap stakes have always proved popular in Ken ¬ tucky and they have as a rule always resulted In good contests also A trio of handicappers better than tlie above named men would be hard to find and many horsemen will testify to this Several instances have occurred where owners and trainers linve raised a hue and cry about their charges having been given too much weight in their opinion only to win the ruce they complained of and tills bore out the ability of the hundicappers hundicappersAH AH horses will carry their weight in the Latonia Championship Stakes and this is at is should be as it is sure to prove more popular than if allow ¬ ances were granted which might give some good horse that has been unlucky a big edge over the others There will be but one allowance and that will be three pounds which will be granted fillies Continued OH second page RIVALRY AMONG BREEDERS Continued from first page making their weight 119 pounds poundsOldtime Oldtime horsemen who gather daily at Churchill Downs nnd Douglas Park invariably break into a discussion of the coming Latonia Championship Stakes while watching the horses at work during the morning hours One man who has been racing and training for forty years or more said that in his opinion this event will do more for the better ¬ ment of the sport than anything in the history of the turf not only because of the vast amount of money attached to it but because of the interest that it is arousing throughout America AmericaMen Men of means witli sporting blood in them will naturally turn to racing when they realize that such a prize is in store for them if they can breed or buy a good enough horse to win such a race as the Latonia Championship Stakes he said and the more competition they encounter the more they will enjoy it as it is competition that makes racing the great sport that it is In my opinion the Latonia stake is in a large measure responsible for the big prices being paid for yearlings at Sara ¬ toga this year as you notice that a majority of the youngsters that brought fancy sums are entered in it and their buyers have a chance to get out on them and then some by winning just this one race raceETERNAL ETERNAL A SURE STARTER STARTERWord Word received this week from James W McClelland owner of Eternai is to the effect that the son of Sweep Hazel Burke is training well for the big stake and in fact is doing better than he ever did before McClelland is determined to disprove the many mean things that were said about his horse lacking staying qualities when he sent him to this state for the Kentucky and Latonia Derbys and he will have a royaV chance to get a clean bill of health for him in this respect at the coming La ¬ tonia meeting Etqrnal has traveled farther to run in muddy going just the opposite to what ha likes this year than any horse in America as he made a trip from Hot Springs to Louisville thence to New York and then back to Latonia and encount at stake stakeTrainer Trainer James Fitzsimmons lias begun preparing Questionnaire his Zeus Frances colt for the Cham ¬ pionship Stakes and in a recent interyieAv in New York he is quoted as saying that lie sees no reason why he should not have an overly good chance to win it lie is bred to run fast and far and with such a capable trainer as Fitzsimmons to get him ready he must be conceded a chance Edward Ar ¬ lington nominated Questionnaire for the stake stakeFortysir Fortysir fillies still remain eligible in the rich event but there are only a few of them that can be given serious consideration If a filly should chance to win it there would be double joy for her owner as her prowess over a long distance of ground would make her value increase consider ¬ ably during the remainder of her racing days and she would be eagerly sought after as a brood mare when she was retired Of the fillies still in Polka Dot winner of the Coaching Club Oaks at Belmont Park last spring seems the best on form and she has gjvcn evidence that she is a staying one She is a sister to the former noted long route mare Embroidery a Cup winner at two miles in Kentucky and when the latter was good it took an unusually fast horse with a lot of stamina to jtrim her herNO NO GELDINGS AMONG PROBABLE STARTERS STARTERSIt It is doubtful if a gelding will go to the post in it as there are only a few unscxcd horses on the eligible list and they are not of the caliber neces ¬ sary to win such a race Only a scattering num ¬ ber of geldings were nominated to begin with and a majority of them were declared at the first op ¬ portunity It is the desire of the breeders who fos ¬ tered the Latonin Championship Stakes to perpetuate the breed of the winner and breeding for stamina rather than extreme speed is sure to be the rule with any number j f breeders from now on onNever Never before was the Kentucky racing public treated to as much sport over a long distance of ground as will be the case this year not only in the stake races which with but a few exceptions arc all at a mile or farther but throughout the daily programs Long distance races are what the public in this section want said Col Winn and long distance races are what they will get Races over a long route of ground help all around as they give horses a chance to show their true racing merits jockeys an opportunity to display their skill better than in sprinting affairs where it is a case of first off first homo and last but not least the racegoers like to be close to the starts I have always favored longdistance races from a personal standpoint and I have discovered in recent years that they can be filled just as quick if not quicker than sprints if there is enough at stake for the owners in the way of a financial reward
