SPECIAL RACE TO BEAT MILE RECORD Contest Betwen Sun Briar and Naturalist Hope of Saratoga Turf Followers BY EDWARD W COLE COLESARATOGA SARATOGA SPRINGS N Y August 1C There is talk of a special race to bring Sun Briar Nat ¬ uralist and other star performers together prob ¬ ably Cudgel and maybe Luciillite but the prin ¬ cipal pair involved is Sun Briar and Naturalist Tlie whole thing is just conversation at present yet something may develop at any moment Members of the Saratoga Club and reading room have had the subject discussed several times hoping that these two highclass horses can be brought to ¬ gether before the meeting closes Just to supply a piece de resistance as it were to an exceedingly enjoyable racing season Both horses are superb milers and it is possible that should they meet in a special race which would give each an equal chance it might create a record for the track and possibly a new American record Sun Briar now holds the track record of 130 as well as the mile and an eighth mark of 150 Naturalist has not shown as brightly in this respect but IK is one of tlie phenomenal horses of tlie year having beaten the best in the higher class and won races with consummate ease Tom Welch his trainer declares he is tlie fastest horse he has ever trained and that speaks plainly the estimation in which he is held heldFew Few if any of tlie Kentucky stables will remain in the east after this meeting has closed The inviting purses at Louisville Latonia and Lexington are the magnets that will draw them west westI I hall go back to Kentucky said Pat Dunne for it cannot be any harder to win there than it is here You have to have good horses to win any lerfjxasjw rs fifi pj J their chances are best During the fall the horses will be pretty well split up between New York Maryland and Kentucky which will give the man with only moderate horses a chance to pick off a purse purseSaratoga Saratoga has never had a meeting as successful as the present one in its history according to the books of the association Tlie first twelve days said secretary Earlocker exceeded expectations and what the next six days will show indicates further gains It is a mistaken idea however to think that all is grist that comes to the mill The badge and day ticket list is enormous Few persons know that there are nearly 4000 badges and day tickets issued at Saratoga SaratogaAndrew Andrew Miller when spoken to on the subject of a special race replied that the Saratoga As ¬ sociation would do anything in the shape of added money within reason to encourage such a race We will do anything said Mr Miller that will in ¬ crease interest in the sport and further the ad ¬ vancement of the thoroughbred thoroughbredEdgar Edgar Murphy arrived on the scene today for the first time this season This is the first year Mr Murphy has been absent from the opening day in a generation I just could not get away from business said Mr Murphy But I am here now and if my friends treat me kindly Ill be here to tlie close of the meeting
